Transcribing Conversations

If you need to keep transcripts of conversations that occur in one or more persistent channels, you can transcribe these conversations and save them to the server's hard disk. You can also transcribe conversations in all dynamic channels on the server.

Chat Service saves all transcripts to a single directory in which each transcript file is saved to a folder with the same name as the channel; however, some characters allowed in channel names are not allowed in directory names. These characters are mapped to ~1, ~2, ~3, and so on. A transcript contains all messages sent publicly to a channel within a 24-hour period (12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.).

You can also configure the Channel Transcription extension from a chat client using a set of in-band commands. For information on how to use these commands, see Configuring Channel Transcription From a Chat Client.

When you install the Channel Transcription extension on a server running Internet Information Server (IIS) version 4.0, Setup also installs an HTML-based transcript processor that allows you to view channel transcripts from a Web browser.

The Channel Transcription extension needs to run on only one server in a chat network. It can run on two or more servers in the same network.

Caution Activating the Channel Transcription extension or any other server extension can decrease Chat Service performance.
