Viewing Channel Transcripts From a Web Browser

The Channel Transcription extension includes a Web-based transcript processor that allows you to view a channel transcript from a Web browser. You can use the transcript processor to view archived transcripts or "snapshots" of live conversations using the browser's Refresh button.

Note The transcript processor requires Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 4.0.

The transcript you see is similar to a chat session, with lines such as "User1 leaves channel" and "User2 says hello." Each nickname is assigned a color, which is used throughout the transcript so you can quickly scan for messages from a particular nickname.

For security, the transcript processor masks key portions of all IP addresses and Domain Name System (DNS) names in the transcript. This prevents a user from reading a transcript and using the information to launch attacks on other chat users, such as connection flooding. However, anyone with read permissions to the transcript directory on the server (C:\Inetpub\Chat\Transcripts by default) can view the complete transcript containing the unmasked IP addresses and DNS names.

Long transcripts are segmented into 100-line pages. Each page has a link to the preceding and following pages in the transcript.

To view channel transcripts from a Web browser

  1. From the Start menu, choose Programs, choose Microsoft Exchange Chat Service, and then choose Channel Transcription Log.
  2. Select a channel in the left pane.

The transcript of the channel is displayed in the right pane.

Important If you change the location of the transcript directories and you plan to use the transcript processor to view transcripts, you must also change the location of the transcript processor's virtual directory.
