Setting Up a Secure Channel for Children

As more children gain access to the Internet, it has become necessary to create secure online environments they can participate in without being exposed to foul or abusive language or preyed upon by the Internet's more nefarious citizens.

If you are unfamiliar with any terms used in this scenario, see Glossary.

Goal

To set up a persistent channel that children, as authenticated members of a member account, can join.

Components

Microsoft® Windows NT® Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 3, Microsoft Exchange Chat Service version 5.5 Service Pack 1, and the Profanity Filter extension installed on the server.

Environment

A Windows NT network.

Configuration

  1. Start the Chat Service Manager utility.
  2. From Microsoft Exchange Chat Service in the left pane, select the chat server where you want to create the channel. If you need to connect to the server, see To Connect to the Server Where You Want to Create the Secure Channel.
  3. Create and add members to the member account.
  4. Set up a secure channel.
  5. Set up a profanity filter for the channel.

Result

Children can join a secure channel and participate in conversations with friends. Intrusions by unauthorized users are prevented through specific joining and speaking restrictions associated with the channel. Furthermore, instances of inappropriate language are censored before they reach the channel.

For information on other ways to create a secure channel, see Creating a Secure Channel.
