Advanced Properties for a Distribution List

Use the Advanced property page to provide a simple display name, set message transfer limits, set a trust level for directory synchronization, and determine whether the distribution list appears in the Address Book.

Getting to the Advanced property page

  1. In the Administrator window, choose a recipients container or an Address Book view container.
  2. Double-click the distribution list you want to configure.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.

Changing the Simple Display Name

The display name of a distribution list can contain non-ANSI characters. Use the Advanced property page to change the display name.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.
  2. In the Simple display name box, type a name to be used by systems that cannot interpret all the characters in the normal display name.

Setting a Limit for Message Transfer

You can set a size limit for messages that can be sent to and from this distribution list.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.
  2. Under Message size, select an option.

Option Description
No limit Messages of any size can be sent or received by this distribution list. This is the default.
Max (K) The largest message this distribution list can send or receive is specified when this option is selected.

Setting the Distribution List Options

There are several distribution list options you can set such as enabling out-of-office messages or hiding the distribution list from the Address Book.

Note   Even if a distribution list is hidden from the Address Book, you can still send mail to the distribution list if you know its e-mail address and explicitly enter it in the To box of a message.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.
  2. Under Distribution list options, select an option.

Option Description
Report to distribution list owner Sends notification reports to the distribution list owner when a message sent to the distribution list has requested delivery notification or is undeliverable.
Report to message originator Sends notification reports to the message originator that indicate the delivery status for each member of the list when a message sent to the distribution list has requested delivery notification or is undeliverable. When this option is not selected, the message originator receives reports from the list, not notification for each member.
Allow out of office messages to originator Sends out-of-office messages from members of the distribution list to the originator. You may not want to select this option for large distribution lists.
Hide from address book Indicates that you do not want this distribution list to appear in the Address Book.
Hide membership from address book Indicates that you do not want the list of recipients that are members of the distribution list to appear in the Address Book.

Setting a Trust Level for Directory Synchronization

The trust level determines whether information about a distribution list is replicated to other sites during directory synchronization. If the trust level exceeds the trust level you specified for the directory synchronization requestor, information about the distribution list is not replicated during directory synchronization.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.
  2. In the Trust level box, select a trust level.

For more information on trust levels, see Microsoft Exchange Server Concepts and Planning.
