Limiting Channel Access by Member Account

Complete the tasks in this section to limit access to a persistent channel to chat users who are members of a member account.

To create the member account

  1. From the Chat Service Manager utility, select a chat server under Microsoft Exchange Chat Service in the left pane.
  2. Select Accounts in the left pane.
  3. From the Action menu, choose New, and then choose Create chat account.
  4. Type the name of the account in the Name box. The account name is limited to 31 characters.
  5. If you want to associate this account with a Windows NT group, select the Associate a Windows NT group with this account check box. If the group doesn't exist, the service creates one with the same name as the member account.

Through this association, only members of the group are allowed to join the channel. This is the preferred method for creating a member account.

  6. Choose OK.

To associate the channel with the account

  1. Create the persistent channel, or select Channels (Rooms) in the left pane, and then select a channel in the right pane.
  2. From the Action menu, choose Properties.
  3. Select the Access property sheet.
  4. In the Member account box, choose the name of the account. The Authenticated clients only check box is automatically selected, which forces the authentication of each account member.
  5. Choose OK.

To add members to the account

If you plan to use Chat Service clear-text or NTLM authentication to authenticate chat users, use the following procedure to add them to the member account. If you plan to use Basic Authentication or Distributed Password Authentication (DPA) to authenticate chat users, you must set up a Site Server authentication group.

Tip If you plan to add fewer than 10 members to the account, use the following procedure. Otherwise, use the Windows NT User Manager utility to add them.

  1. Select the new account in the left pane.
  2. From the Action menu, choose New, and then choose Add member. A member can be a Windows NT user or group.
  3. In the Add Member dialog box, locate the names or groups you want to add to the account (or just type them in), and then choose OK.
