Schema Properties and Attributes

Schema attributes are properties that describe Microsoft Exchange Server directory objects. The schema defines the structure for information in a mail-recipient, such as a mailbox, distribution list, remote-address, or public folder. The schema's rules structure the information, such as which attributes are associated with which objects and which types of values can be associated with the attributes. The schema also defines the relationship between objects and the directory enforces these rules.

You use schema attributes with directory import, directory export, user list files, and migration primary files to add, modify, or remove attributes from recipients. Most of the attributes are shared by all recipients ¾ mailbox, custom recipients, distribution lists, and public folders.

Tip   For best performance when importing thousands of changes, import them to a Microsoft Exchange Server computer that has been optimized with the Microsoft Exchange Optimizer to be a connector type of server.

The following are some terms that you need to understand:

Types
The kind of values that an attribute contains.

Object (DN) or Object (OR)
Objects can be referenced with their directory or organization name. For example, the recipient container has a directory name of /o=<organization name>/ou=<site name>/cn=Recipients.

String (Teletex)
ASCII characters only.

String (Unicode)
Any characters supported by the Unicode code page.

Enumeration
A list of valid values.

Multivalued
An attribute that can have more than one value. For example, distribution lists can have multiple members.

Backlink
An attribute that keeps track of connections between objects. It should not be modified directly. For example, the direct reports attribute is backlinked to the manager's field. By changing the manager's field, the direct reports fields of the old manager and new manager are automatically updated. Do not modify backlinks with directory import.

NC
Naming context. Used with directory replication.

For example, you can create an auto-reply message if you plan to be out of the office for an extended period and want to notify those sending you mail of your absence. It can also be used by public folders to explain rules for their use or by help desk distribution lists to tell a user when to expect a reply. Modifying this value resets all AutoReply history information. See related attributes AutoReply-Message, AutoReply-Subject, and Maintain-AutoReply-History.

Information in the comment field, unlike Admin-Description, is visible in the Address Book.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Deliv-Cont-Length String (Octet) False

This attribute defines the maximum message size in kilobytes. When a number is entered, it sets the size of the message; when absent is selected, there is no message size limit. Microsoft Exchange Server computers store messages in a single-copy store. Therefore, no matter how many mailboxes are on a server, or whom a message is addressed to, there is only one copy in the private information store. If a distribution list spans many servers or systems, you can limit the size of messages sent to it by specifying the maximum message size in this property.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Deliv-EITs String (Octet) True

This property defines the allowable encoded information types (EIT) to be delivered. These information types describe the contents of a particular type of data so that the receiving system can display the data accordingly. The three most common types are MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions), uuencode and uudecode. Both uuencode and uudecode are tools that prepare binary files for transport between UNIX systems. Additionally, uuencode is used extensively to encode non-7-bit data in messages. When the message is received at the destination, the encoded data needs to be decoded by using uudecode. The Internet Mail Service can automatically encode data in outbound messages and automatically decodes parts in incoming messages.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Deliv-Ext-Cont-Types String (Octet) True

This attribute sets the X.400 P1 content types.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Display-Name String (Unicode) False

This is the name (a maximum of 256 alphanumeric characters) that is displayed in the Administrator window. The syntax of this field is Unicode, which understands all languages and their special characters. The attribute's string is displayed as the user's name in the Address Book. This is used in two ways: as the basis for how to sort the address list, and for attempting to resolve addresses when typing an address in the To or Cc boxes instead of selecting an address. You can change this for many mailboxes if you change the way you want to sort addresses. For example, you can switch from First Last to Last, First.

If you set this property to true, then this address is not seen in the Address Book. Mail can be routed to it, the user can send mail from it, and people can address mail to it from their personal address books. This property can be used during migration to hide new mailboxes until the users begin using them. It can also be used to hide upper levels of management addresses from the Address Book, although the reject and accept mail from recipient attributes can be used to prevent nuisance mail if that is the goal.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued

The distribution list can be expanded only at the designated server, unless this field is empty in which case it can be expanded on any server. Appears in the General property page as Expansion server. You should set this only for extremely large distribution lists that, during expansion, cause performance problems on the server. For example, if you have not modified the e-mail addresses in the Site Addressing property page, the mailbox's SMTP address is <mail-nickname>@site.enterprise.com>. Changing mail-nickname should be done before users begin to use the system, or you will be changing their e-mail name used by people outside the organization. In addition, the Address Book displays this property. Limited to 64 characters.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Target-Address String (Teletex Extended) False

The address of the recipient in the recipient's native addressing system. For example, custom recipients from MS Mail (PC) have MS-type target addresses. This is the address the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to route the message. The address should be in the form of <type>:<address>. Valid types depend on which gateways you have installed. Check any mailbox's e-mail address list for valid types. The value of this property can be up to 1123 characters long.

The following are the attributes that apply only to distribution lists.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
DL-Member-Rule String (Octet) True

Specifies a search filter for the Rules-Based distribution list function. This is a hidden attribute. By default, all Microsoft Exchange Server distribution lists can have distribution lists as members. This saves the administrator time when creating a division distribution list ¾ the only members would be the department distribution lists and the head of the division. A company-wide distribution list could take only a minute to create. If you do not want to use this time-saving feature of Microsoft Exchange Server, set this value to False.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Hide-DL-Membership Boolean False

Indicates if the membership should be hidden from the Address Book. The default is false. Use this if you need to create a distribution list with a secret membership. This does not prevent someone from sending a mail message with return receipt selected to the distribution list (see related attributes OOF-Reply-To-Originator, Report-to-Originator and Report-to-Owner), but it prevents casual browsing. Combine this with Hide-From-Address-Book for increased security.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Member Object (OR Name) True

Lists the members of the distribution list.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Member of Object (DN) True

See Is-Member-Of-DL.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
OOF-Reply-To-Originator Boolean False

Sends message back to originator when mailbox owner is out of the office. Set the value to false if Hide-DL-Membership is set to true.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Owner Object (DN) False

The DN of the mailbox that owns the distribution list.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Report-to-Originator Boolean False

Specifies if the message originator should receive any reports. If false, the message originator does not receive reports. Set the value to false if Hide-DL-Membership is set to true.

Property or Attribute Type Multivalued
Report-to-Owner Boolean False

Specifies if the distribution list owner receives any reports. If false, the distribution list owner does not receive reports.

Public Folder

Public folders have an obj-class of pf. Public folders are different from the other three mail recipients because you can't export them with directory export, or create them with directory import. You can create them with the Migration Wizard, however.

Many of the following attributes for distribution list are explained in the "Mailbox" section:
