Rallye edition or not?

Postby Dan Sward (Swardd) » 12 May 2002 21:07

I have a recently purchased 1972 Challenger. After decoding VIN and Fender tag numbers, I am still confused as to whether or not I have a Rallye edition, or a car that had Rallye-like options added to it. I'm wondering if anybody can help me figure out what I have. The car's VIN number is JS23G2B193851. I think the "S" stands for Rallye or Special. This car has a 318 2barrel, per the "G". I believe I read that Rallyes only came with 340s and higher in '72, so this leads me to believe it may not be a Rallye. However, I have correct (per the fender tag) hemi-orange paint, black side stripes, rallye instrument cluster, and the fender tag indicates I should have a sport hood, though I currently don't. These sound like Rallye options to me. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Rallye edition or not?

Yes, there were 1853 JS23G2B Challenger Rallyes made for the 1972 model year so you have a real Rallye. To be correct, the car does need the sport hood, but the ones for your year are easier to find than the 1970 sport hoods - best of luck to you.

Rallye edition or not?

The infomation on my web site is in desperate need of an update. Something you have just found out Dan. I had intended to update the site last Autumn but have not been able to find the time. I do not see me having any time in the near future either. I am very sorry to everybody but there are just not enough hours in the day now!

This message board and my involvement with the Mopar Muscle Association take up the small amount of computer time at home my wife allows me (she don't see much of me as it is) and writing web pages at work during quiet times is a thing of the past.

With my own car to run at long last my weekends are going to be full just working on that or driving it.

So sorry folks. The Challenger Home Page is not as up to date as it should be and will be staying like that for some time yet.

wouldn't a 72 ralley car have the A57 code? my 73 was the opposite. 340, 4speed , dual exhuast with tips, rally cluster, etc. flat hood , no scoops or stripes and no A57 code.

I am not sure if a 1972 Rallye needs the A57 code because in 1972 the Rallye still had a JS body shell. In 73-74 all Challengers were JH cars. I don't know if any of your 72 cars out there have this code or not but I would guess not. Am I right or have I got it wrong?

The A57 Rallye Package is a 73/74 option code.

Rallye edition or not?

A real 72 Rallye has the JS vin#. At least mine has. But the tag also includes the V6X - black side stripes, N85 - rallye dash, J54 - sport hood, N41/N42 - dual exhaust w/ chrome tips codes which were all standard on a rallye challenger (also see the VIN/option messages) which would mean a real rallye should have these codes stamped on the tag. So the A57 is, as Jack mentioned, a 73/74 option.

Or am I wrong?

Oh, Dave, when I find some time I will try to make an updated 72 challenger page for your homepage. Do you write everything in html?

That would be a great help Hans. I do write everything in html and I usually use something very basic like Notepad (because it was on every computer I was ever left alone with at work!) or at the very most a simple html editing tool dowloaded free from Tucows.

By the way. have you noticed on the list of option codes on my web site the A57 code is listed as a 1972-4 code? There is just so many things I need to put right!
