Hood-to-Cowl seal mounting

Postby Christer » 18 Aug 2004 15:28

My question is whether the gap of the seal is supposed to point outwards (against the engine) or inwards (against the vent intake)? :?

I couldn´t find a very good photo of it but this one is the best I found (See http://challenger.mpoli.fi/phpbb/viewto ... 3161#13161 ). It looks like the gap of the seal is pointing against the engine at the photo. On the Pietro-Fraua Challenger ( www.pietro-frua.de/1970_dodge.htm ) on the other hand, it is pointing in the opposite direction. What is right and what is wrong?

Funny (?) background: Some time ago, I bought a Hood-to-Cowl seal kit from YO. Since the kit includes a set of quite ugly clips, I felt pretty sure that the seal should have the gap pointing against the vent intake (like on the pietro-frua Challenger). After that, I saw a couple of cars with the seal mounted in the opposite direction. So I disassembled it and mounted it again in the opposite direction

Mine is off my car, but is clearly opened towards the firewall. This would be outward.

The open part faces forward.

It looks to me they changed the seal around on the Frua Challenger because the hood opens the other way to normal.

Maybe you are right. :? Other possibilities are that there is some kind of fold on the underside of the Pietro-Frua-hood, or that they simply had forgotten which way the seal is supposed to be mounted, when it was time for assembly (....and had no Message board to ask  )

It feels like I go into details  , but that is what this MB is for, isn´t it?

Here is a pic of the "ugly" clips. Maybe they aren´t so ugly after all or have I just become used to them? The sharp edges that are pointing upwards are for assembly, or...? (I think you have to enlarge the pic to be able to see the edges...)

I don't think that's right Christer. I mounted mine so the clips are under and the spikes stick through the rubber and bend over. Not easy to do.

I am not surprised that I maybe have mounted them the wrong way but I think I will keep them as they are for the moment. It feels like the easiest way to mount the seal would have been to simply glue it on. I think that one or two out there already have done that (just a guess....)
