440 cranks Identification

I am aware that not all 440 cranks are drilled for a 4 speed. Some auto cranks were drilled but not finished. Without having one with me, how will I tell if the crank I buy from someone will be right for a 4 speed? Perhaps someone knows where I could get a picture or something of one that is correct? I'm also told there is a piece I could purchase to make it right, even though that it sounds wrong!

I'm a bit confused. Any help would be very appreciated. thanks.

They had to machine the end of the crank for the 4-speed and that is the only difference.

But yes. If it is an automatic crank then it still has a hole in the end. It is just not machined. Instead you can buy a bearing they presses into the cast hole in the auto crank.

I am sure we had a thread on here ages ago about this somewhere. either in this section or the trans section. :?

BTW I think the Mopar 4-speed is terrible and would never convert a car to one (if that is what you are doing). It is a lot of hassle and a PITA.

A freind of mine converted his years ago but has now converted back to auto because he was sick of the problems and the effort.

I have driven a 4-speed Mopar only once and found it horrible. Being British I have driven 4 and 5 speeds all my life. Including in a couple of single seater race cars.
In fact you have to learn in a stick shift in order to pass a driving test in the first place.

But the Mopar unit is like driving an old tractor. It is not what I would call a sports transmission. Sorry. :roll:

Hi horsepower MoPars with four speeds are violent! I love it! They rule! :twisted: Of course,Dave, there is always the Keisler 5-6-speed options! Internal rail actuation,(no linkage), and hydraulic actuated clutch. I have never driven one but have read that it's very smooth and fast. You are right however. And for that reason the "slick shift" race only modification was usually done by serious drag racers.

Thanks guys. I know what your saying abou the 4speeds. for that reason I stay away from the track with the chally. I have a friend who's lives at the track and I'm sure he wants to slap me upside the head when he sees my shifting – Like you said, I shift it like a tractor.

Doesn't seem to much trouble if I end up with an automatic crank. THanks for the links christer.
