Look what Santa left me...

Postby cv70chall » 14 Jan 2013 20:24

Managed to find this under the tree. !!
It goes in next week. I do have a question though. There are two shims located on each axle end. Should I replace these or simply give them a good cleaning?

Thanks

All it takes is a good cleaning, if you ask me. The only reason for changing them would be if they are damaged in some way. (I am not an expert, so I might be wrong.)

For future needs: Where is that tree located?

Looks nice Chuck
Tell us what casting number it has on the pumpkin housing, 742 for example, lets you know if its a heavy duty unit. Has it got a Suregrip inside it?

2881489 currently with 2.76 nonposi.
However-
POSI with 3.55 gears is being targeted as we speak.

489 is good, ideal performance choice, 3.55's will pep up the motor nicely without hurting driveability :D
Just make sure if you have the larger heavy duty pinion that you have a prop that matches.

It's in and ready- at least until I grab a POSI with 355's, which is next on the list. We managed to get the rears switched out without removing the brakes/ plates- saving us some time. It's amazing how wimpy that other rear end was!

Looks like I'm officially about 2 weeks away from driving this car...finally.
I am insearch of the rubber extension that fits on the body just above the pinion snubber. Does anyonne know what this part is actually called and if so where I can snag one?

Thanks!

It's just called a pinion snubber rubber, maybe pinion snubber bumper, should get it from most big resto houses easily I would have thought

He already has the pinion snubber (shown in the photos) Ade.

It just hits up against the bottom of the floor. There is not anything that mounts to the body above it. Although Hemi cars got an extra re-enforcement plate welded on the floor.

Oh yeah used now I've actually  looked at the pic
There is a rubber bumper on top of the pinion snubber isn't there? I thought that's what he meant.
Did only Hemi cars have the plate Dave? My 72 has a reinforcement plate welded in that area, would it be the same or is there a strengthening gusset on that part of the floor pan anyway?

I was told by Jim Wilson that Hemi cars got an extra bit welded on top of that existing floor re-enforcement. Never seen it myself mind.

That is what I used to argue Drew. But Jim insisted that there was EXTRA re-enforcement on Hemi's.

Maybe he was thinking of B-body cars? I am sure I have seen those without any re-enforcement at all.

I'm no expert but there is a 'plate' on my SixPack 70 but on my 318 2 barrel 72 there is none. The plate is a curved steel plate around .100 thick and is contoured to fit right above the snubber. I wouldnt worry about it unless you plan on drag racing the car. For handling,,the snubber isnt going to help you.

Maybe big block only maybe that 318 wont torque up enough to bounce the pinon.I know mine is nice and shiny

I no longer have a 318. I have a fairly beastly 360 in there now, but if you say I won't need it then I won't worry about it.
