Brake Light Problem

Postby matt » 06 Jun 2012 14:23

Well took the my challenger out of winter storage yesterday,a nd I am having a problem with the brake lights, and I wasn't sure if anyone has had the same problem before.

Car is 1970 with 440

Brake lights start flashing and stop working all together, then start working again. I checked the pedal switch it has power to it, and it sends power to the other side once it is activated. The white wire which connects to the brake switch is reading negative when disconnected?? My best guess is the turn signal switch is shorting?? What do you guys think? I changed this swtich 4 years ago with a part from year one and I havn't had any problems with it prior. Is this common?

Thanks Matt

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere to me rather than a short.

Check the connector on the wiring that comes out of the steering column.

Also check the flasher units and their connections.

Thanks Dave,

Yeah I am going to re-check the wiring when I get a minute. Do you know if that white wire that attaches to the brake light swtich is supposed to read negative out of the steering coloum? I can't imagine it does, but I can't find my manual.

Ah I missed that point in your original post. Not sure what you mean by negative?

In a DC system you can't have voltage less than zero. If you do you have the leads on your meter the wrong way around.

How do you get a negative reading with a test light?
Does it suck light into it like a blackhole? :D
