Hey mates I got a nice stereo I just fixed to the underside of the dash right above the trans tunnel, looks sweet and most importantly ain't messed the original dash about, but where can I fix the front speakers where it doesnt require cutting the door or kick panels? I thought about just under the dash on the drivers side but it will get a full frontal attack from the fresh air vent when it's open, I could build some shield around it I spose
What about under the seats?
Rears are easy, with Carols special fabricating talents I could get her to make me a new parcel shelf so I don't have to butcher the original

On mine I fitted a single unit into the existing center speaker location on the dash. It had two tweeters and stereo wiring. Combined with a good pair of rears it sounded OK. However to make it fit I had to cut the metalwork of the dash frame somewhat and paint the frame of the speaker black so it blended in. But once the original speaker grill was back in place you couldn't tell.

I decided not to cut into the door or kick panels either and actually am building a 4x10 mdf panel that houses 2 4-inch coax speakers. They'll fit in nicely under the OEM grille and having stereo is a plus.
Standard 6x9's in the back deck and a power amp for sound quality. Remember to add dynamat!

Do you got a dash with one or three speaker grilles? I am just wondering...

Just one Christer, I read Daves post and it makes a lot of sense to use the speaker port in the dash top.
I did think of making a little box to sit on top of the trans tunnel just below the dash and mounting the speakers on either side of it so the sound points toward each footwell

It was some sort of "dual voice" speaker. I can't remember where I got it?

I think I done good, a pair of JBL 5" mids under the dash on little brackets I fabbed, a pair of Vibe 6x9s on the parcel shelf and a Kenwood head unit attatched to a 200w power amp, should just about cope with makin more bass than a big block with a bit of luck

Don't think you will get much dynamic range like that mate. Make sure you don't get out of phase reflected pressure waves from the rear of the speakers under the dash otherwise you will have less bass.

I have them so that the front part of the speaker is level with the lower edge of the metal frame of the dash, left side just to the left side of the handbrake release pull, right side snugged up against the fresh air vent, both pointing down to the footwell floor.
I thought I should have some air space behind the cone? I hung them in various placements before I fixed em and they don't sound too bad, but that was before I decided to add the separate amp

Sound is a wave. As the cone moves it produces waves in front and behind the cone. The wave behind is identical to the wave in front but 180 degrees out of phase. If the wave behind is reflected forward it will add to the wave in front.
Now if the timing of that reflection is right (in phase), the two waves add together and produce great bass. Some speakers are designed with tubes to bring this wave out in phase with the front.

But if this wave is much out of phase it will cancel out some of the bass. In fact if they combine 180 degrees out they cancel each other out completely.

Because you have no way of knowing how these waves from the back of the cone are going to interact in your car you are better off enclosing the speakers so that those rear waves are sealed in. Or use sound insulating behind them to absorb them. Some loft insulation would do.

Sound clarity, detail and stereo seperation depend on the tweeters. You need good quality tweeters to really bring the sound to life.

I finished wiring everything up last night and decided to try it without the power amp, pleased i did too cos its really very good, loads of deep and rich bass, full midrange, really sharp crystal clear sound, i think its more by luck than design but well pleased with the results

It will allow you to mount two smaller speakers in the center of the dash and still look stock.
