R/T Fender Mounted Turn Signal Indicators

Was this an option or standard on the 70 R/T?

So true. I have never seen a Challenger with both turn signal indicators AND a R/T-hood.

Very strange because no way would you be able to see the right side one from the drivers seat.

At that time, Mopars were not built with perfection in mind so why be surprised if we have stumbled on yet another oddity? :D No offence though, we love the cars anyway (...or is it partly becuase of these oddities that we love them so much? ).

A long shot from me, is that during 1970-1971, when there was a R/T-package, they maybe had a better control over the production so that the cars didnĀ“t get this a bit doubtful combo. After that, they maybe lost some control, and built them a bit more arbitrarily!?

(All of the "photo evidence" above shows 1972-1974 Challengers.
None of them shows 1970-1971 Challengers.)

Cars for photo opertunities and road tests were often optioned as much as possible to impress the journalists. That might have something to do with it.

Like I said in another post, 73-74's got the turn signal for sure...if they got the light package. It didn't matter if the car had a flat hood or the Rallye hood. I know 1970's didn't get them but I don't know about 71 and 72.

73 was the first year that the factory went to a standardised fender mount turn signal. 72 still used the 1970 style that used a stud and nut to attach the light. It might be as simple as that. Starting with the new style light, they put it on all cars that were coded for it. All the pictures above are of 73-74's.....none are 72's.

The 73 Dodge lineup cataloge shows a dark silver metalic Challenger on the cover with the fender mounted turn signals. The car was accually a 72 with air brushed bumper guards. If you look close, you can see the 72 style vynal top, 72 style fender mount turn signals and NO bumper fillers. Obviously that car was built for press and you can't really use that to determine if 72's got the light with the Rallye hood.

Well my '73 Rallye 340 has the Lighting Package but does not have the fender mounted repeaters. Also doesn't seem to have the trunk courtesy light. But it has everything else from the Light Package incl the ign switch delay light. The previous owner told me he called it a 'semi Lighting Package'.

You couldn't order any of those items separately. You got it in a package or you didn't get anything at all.

well sorry to spoil your theory but mine aint got em and its got the light package along with full Rallye options. Although i can't say 100% that the fenders have not been replaced, it is highly unlikely that BOTH were replaced since it hasn't had a front end collision. It is possible but not probable that both have been replaced at some stage, but both have the original black factory paint under the current paint job. In any case there were always exceptions to the factory packages and option rules.

Was yours an export car originally? Perhaps different rules/regulations on export cars?
