Petty BLue engine paint

Postby 73GoManGo » 16 Sep 2011 18:05

I can't find a light blue engine paint anywhere. I can match it best with straight Rustoleum I think. But I'm not sure if straight rustoleum will hold on. Maybe If I use a high heat engine primer under it it might work. any thought? and then I was wanting to poly urethane clear over that. Anyone had any luck this?

the chrylser corporate blue engine paint seems too dark to be a petty style blue.

not sure how to post picture of what i'm talking about or I would.

You don't need high temp paint for the engine. Regular paint will work OK if that helps.

What engine is it for? I've got a couple of cans of Mopar Engine Blue if you're still in need.

The correct light blue, at least for the 318 in my '70 Challenger, is plasti-kote No. 232, "Chrysler Blue." It's called an "engine enamel" that they claim resists heat to 500F. It matched the original paint on my engine very nicely and has held up well for over 10 years now.

Everyone has their own experiences. In my case, the car came from the factory with the engine painted light blue. After 30 years, the engine paint had held up pretty well, except for a few places where it had burned and flaked off. This happened most noticably on the heads, right behind and next to the exhaust manifolds, and on the intake manifold crossover and choke well.

So we scanned those places and found the hottest surface temperature on the heads to be about 450F(230C) and about 300F(150C) on the intake manifold. That's why that when we restored the car in 1999, we opted to go with the plasti-kote engine enamel which is rated for higher temps. Plus the plasti-kote was an exact color match. After 10 years that paint has held up well, even on those hot locations.

Sorry. I was being "amusing".

500F is 260C so WAY over boiling.

My 440 block used to get temps in spots as high as you measured. But with a few mods and plenty of timing (initial in particular) I got the temps a lot cooler. On the intake in particular. But of course I had the choke well and exhaust cross-over blocked off.
I was only going by "feel" when I did no follow-up checks as I lost access to the thermal probe I had used initially. Shame because it would have been useful to know exactly what the effects in each case were.

If I had given a serious answer I would have said to use the products sold by Bill Hirsch. Fantastic quality paint. http://www.hirschauto.com/

But I do know people that have used "normal" automotive paint with very good results. Now if that would last 10 years or not I don't know.....
