Paint mask/respirator

Postby redgum78 » 09 Apr 2011 13:53

Can anyone answer this for me...

Today I sprayed one of my rear quarters with a 2 pack high build primer/filler. It is great stuff for taking out the small imperfections in the metal work and where I mig welded in the new quarter skin.

Typical me I used it first then later wondered if the respirator I had on was up to the job. The respirator is a good quality silicon rubber with an expensive filter and pre filter that the bloke in the safety shop said I needed for spray painting.

When I later looked online I found conflicting advice. Some saying NEVER spray 2 pack with out a positive pressure full face mask and ventilated painting booth and others saying a good half faced respirator (like mine) was ok.
Does anyone know just how bad these 2 pack paints are? What are the minimum safety requirements.

Thanks
Dan

I wouldn't worry about it. If I did it a lot or for a living that would be another matter. Maybe.

Your local Health and Safety people might have something on their website if you can find it.

I had to do "asbestos awareness" training the other week because I sometimes drill holes in walls and run cables above ceilings.
Been doing the job for over 30 years and they worry about me breathing the stuff in now?
Just covering their own backsides more like.
I remember me and my Dad demolishing a couple of asbestos roofs when I was a teenager. And thing of all the brake dust I have inhaled over the last 40 years. And now they tell me it might harm me if I breath the stuff now at my age.

God bless them for worrying I might get a fatal lung problem when I am 90 years old simply by screwing a web cam onto a wall.
The Dave giveth and the Dave taketh away.

I am thinking the same now....long term exposure a positive pressure mask would be the shot but the amount I am doing a new filter in my mask should do the job.
I also got hold of this old fan from my Dad yesterday. I found an old electric motor and mounted the whole lot in the roof of my shed this morning for an extraction system. It works realy good.

make suer that to fan doesnt draw dust into your shed when your painting cos 2 pack is bad for sucking up dust also use an earth strap from the car so it doesnt build up static & attract dust

Thanks for the tips Ian. :) I hadn't heard of using a static strap before.
