My '70 R/T

Postby Russ » 16 Dec 2010 5:08

G'day all.

Bought myself a '70 R/T Challenger in May, and I finally got it home yesterday (the guys importing it for me were slooooooooooooow). Purchased from San Diego, CA - I live in Sydney, Australia.

It a 383 Magnum, A727 TF with 8 3/4 3.23 SureGrip - all 3 #'s matching.

Originally left the factory FE5 Bright Red with White Longitudinal stripe, bonnet blackout and black interior. Was repainted by a previous owner about 13 years ago in the colour you see here, which I believe is a GM colour: Cortez Silver from a '69 Chevelle.

Have a bunch of receipts dating back to '97 which include a PST front end rebuild kit, front rear sway bars - and a host of other stuff, CPPA Headers, Magnaflow mufflers, engine rebuild, interior is near new. Everything was either reconditioned or replaced where needed - and since it was only driven sparingly since then, it's all pretty much the same.

Does have a small amount of rust around both rear wheel arches. Nothing earth-shattering though, so it's not a major issue for me (yet!).

Unfortunately, since it's sat practically dormant since May, upon arrival the battery was dead - but after replacing it still couldn't get any spark from the ignition coil. The plan was to replace the plugs, leads etc, so adding a coil & distributor to that list is not a bad idea anyways.

Hopefully I can have it running and on the road before Christmas - fingers crossed! - so expect a bazillion and 6 questions ... and photo's to match.

Cheers,
Russ

Nice looking car Russ. Did you go to the States and check it out or buy it from photos etc?
You wouldn't by chance be bringing it to the Summernats in January would you?

Cheers

Never stepped foot in the States unfortunately. Found the car online and had a company do an inspection for me. Few hundred hi-res photo's, video & report.

Won't be at Summernats. Never been there, never plan on it. Not my type of event, and by all accounts from mates that have been, way too many f***-wits.

Hoping to make it to Chryslers on the Murray, but I can't really say I'm a car show type of person. They get old pretty quick and very repetitive. I'm at the other end of the spectrum when it comes to cars. A lot of folks tend to like cruising together for an hour, then sitting around all day drinking coffee & talking - can't really say that's my thing. I'd much rather be out driving to places I've never been.

You are right about the summernats, I went several years ago and there was heaps of knob heads. However a friend of mine went last year and he said they had made a real effort to clean it up. Apparently they were told clean it up or shut it down. I havn't been to a Chryslers on the Murray yet. I might take my chally when I get it finished.
Your car looks realy nice Russ, good luck getting it on the road.

It has now been registered, and is fully road legal and ready to drive - just in time for my 3 weeks off work

Expect plenty of pics & video in the coming weeks.

Bit of an update.

Had some rust in the rear quarters repaired at the end of last year, and had it left in primer whilst the body-shop shut for the holidays. Gave it back to them last week, and it's now been painted. Very pleased with the work.

All that's left is the big decision - longitudinal stripe back on or leave it off?

I'll drive it as is for awhile whilst I make up my mind.

Yeah, I absolutely love the colour. Even if it is from a '69 Corvette!

It did have the longitudinal stripe, but removed it so the rear quarter could be painted after having the rust removed.

Much prefer it without the stripe, so I'm not going to bother getting a new one put on. Just going to grab the R/T fender emblems and put those on instead.

Have found myself a set of NOS R/T fender emblems. Should have them here in a week or so.

Am now pondering the removal of the bonnet blackout. Will wait until the fender emblems are on before making up my mind.

Also, during the above mentioned road-trip, I managed to lose a D. Guess I'm now driving a DOGE Challenger
