New and the Old

Postby Eddie » 05 Mar 2009 21:26

I drove both Challengers today. Hard  The 09 drives much more precise. The 'Old' has more torque. Much more! But I have to give that little Hemi credit with that 6 speed tranny. It's a sweet package  I had to remove the Shaker assembly and replace the NGK's it was smoking like a diesel! The choke horn was closed! I put a cable-Lock tie thru the rod/shaft and 'locked' it open fully. It ran great after that.

Good photo that.

I wouldn't ever use anything other than NGKs these days. Except maybe Denso's (also marketed in the US as Accel).

I wonder why the choke was stuck shut Eddie?
I would have just fixed the choke open and the plugs would have cleaned themselves up after a few miles. But I guess you were not going too far with it.
Yet.

I dont know Dave. As we removed the Shaker baseplate, I noticed the choke lever with the rod attached but the black retainer clip just hanging there. The choke was at a steep angle, almost closed. I re-tracted the choke rod, put a Zip-Lock through the lever, pulled it up tight with needle nosed pliers, then cut the tail off the ziplock for a neat job. It's fully open now. Since it will never be driven in the cold weather and I have alloy heads with no crossover for the thermostatic spring, it's not needed. The NGK's were pretty gas fouled, you guys should have seen the smoke. It acted like a stuck needle and seat too! I rapped the center carb with a rubber handle as Dan started the car with the new plugs and choke fully opened. It ran fine after that, giving Daniel a white knuckle ride. I'll tape the next one!

I removed the choke from my demon along time ago , i seem to have problems with the choke sticking,i drive mine in the winter and i have found with the "winter blend" of fuel they sell here, any time it gets above 50 degrees f,the fuel seems to evaporate off alot faster and then it vapor locks and i have to flog it to get it cleared out,

This type of thing will motivate me to save some money and buy a new chally that starts and runs without a bunch of stuff to worry about :frown: :tears:

Yes you see a lot of 300s here in the UK too. Some people remove the Chrysler badge and fit a Bentley badge on there instead and it fools some people. But not gearheads.

So is your image!

That one is 3072 x 2304 pixels.
Try to keep them down to 1024x768 or at most 1280x960 otherwise my poor old computer struggles to download them.

OK guys, lets go for a ride! :P It was very windy that day, I got up to about 80 MPH, pretty slow for me but with all the farm Implements out, and the State police too, it was wise I went that slow. Hope you guys enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUSnBAXMeuI

Thanks Man, I was hoping for a bit better sound quality but with the wind buffeting it was difficult to do so. The X- Pipe exhaust gives a different raspy sound when cruising around then has a 'growl' as the revs ratchet up.

rofl yea my camera man just didnt get his seat/shoulder belt, (its a 4 point harness )on tight enough, and clearly was not ready for the hard corners,
of course it doesnt help he weighs almost 300 lbs,it has the" blair witch" effect :s024: :s024: ,but it sounds good  :s009:

oh btw if you go to cuda challenger .com there is a car of the month, i have hooked up with this guy up in golden hes has a sweet cuda with lots of mods , the only reason i mention this is cause and the scenery behind his car is only a sampling of what we have here in colorado, the pic is breath taking to say the least!

Hey Eddie, i spose that's you with your arm in the engine bay? looks like you got about the same amount and colour of hair as me! Is that a fairly new driveway? No oils stains on it that i can see yet! Love your shaker - i wonder why Chrysler chose to put such a big "Shaker" sign under the hood? They don't need to constantly tell the owner what he has...? Or maybe the mechanic.

Can you please tell me the paint code of your car. I assume it was the same red available in 71? That's the colour i want to paint my RT clone. Is yours done in acrylic or 2-Pack? If 2 pack, are you happy with the high smooth gloss? Because compared to the acrylic of the day with its orange peel texture, the modern paints today are very very glossy- like the surface of water. I am still undecided whether to use acrylic or 2-pack.

thats the 71 wrapped up behind me

Thanks GoldenBlack440. Yeah that ratty looking dude is me. I lost my hair when I was 18,,to many anabolic steroids,,my teeth in a few years, too many fights,, my mind a few years ago,,too many fat mean women in my younger years. My 70 has a FE5 colour, original red paint colour but done in PPG BaseCoat/Clearcoat,,I assume you are referring to 2-pak as Basecoat/clearcoat correct? Yes, I choose to have this done with a modern paint that doesnt outgas and fade like the old enamels of the 60's,,keep in mind in those days they had a lot of lead in those paints to help with the flowout. Today this is not permitted,(the lead), as well as most people using '2 pack' but there is another type of paint that is very easy to work with and flows better than the old lead based paints. WaterBourne! It's some slick stuff! They make a waterbourne primer and base coat system. When completed,(dried), it will look non-shiny but extrememly smooth with great flowout, and no wet sanding. Then the whole thing is covered in single stage clear, very wet coat. It dries beautifully! if you mess it up before the clear coat,, and want to start over you simply spray it off with water and it rinses off! The older paints are still available but without the lead. I have little body experience and am much too detailed for paint gun work. I want to steady my hand and observe the smallest of details, like working on an engine. This makes for a shitty painter!!(me) I dont know if this waterbourne is available in your area yet. It will be ,,,it's also eco friendly which I am an advocate of. Oh yeah, new driveway! I need to put a couple of short black marks there dont I!! My wife thinks you&I look alike.(Sorry about that) In 1971 Dodge used the FE5 paint code for 'Red" on the Challenger? I really dont know GB,, maybe one of the other members would.

Jes, a new 6.1 Hemi, 6-speeder Tremec, Trak-Pak,,Traction Control OFF, Hill Assist OFF,,fattest rubber that will fit the wheel wells and those forged Alcoa's, dampers set on full firm, Cold Air Kit, Stainless Headers, dynatech exhaust. Gut the interior, the battery is already in the trunk from the factory!! It would be a thrill ride for sure man. OK trade!!

Ian, I dont understand why they dont export a version of the new Challenger overseas. With as much interest this Car has generated it would seem like a profitable venture for Chrysler to export them? Maybe Fiat will force them to do it next year when they purchase 60% of Chrysler and open new markets for both companies,(at least thats the 'rumor').
