71 Challenger rear wing

Postby Goldenblack440 » 29 Dec 2008 17:42

Just learnt something new yesterday- the 71 Challengers had a different go-wing to the 70 and earlier Mopars. I had no idea. Because my 71 Chal RT Clone is getting a repro 70 wing which i thought was the right look. The 71 was thinner and more droopy at the sides i think. I can't find a good picture of one on this forum. Anyone have any good pics of a 71 wing? I think they were also called Gull-Wing- not Go-Wing, is this right? Calderone in Chile has a picture of one, but it is upside down

My question is this: was this different wing carried through to all other 71 onwards Mopars? (eg, Dart, Charger, Duster, Demon etc?) Or did they only put it on the 71 Challenger and Cuda?

Also wondering if the 72 onwards Challengers/Cudas could be optioned with a wing from the factory, or was it a dealer fitted option, or discontinued as a factory option?

Thanks for help guys!

I am also interested in learning about this. I traded a buddy of mine a wiper motor for a go-wing/gull-wing off of his '71 Duster, and will be replacing my rear spoiler with the wing. (My warped spoiler would be a mess to make work with a nice paint job. Would the other 71 mopars also have a different wing?

Aerodynamic Spoiler Package

Postby moparnut » 29 Dec 2008 23:54

Available for late 1970 and 1971 models only as a factory option. rear wing spoiler and a front chin spoiler. Dropped at the end of the 1971 model year but remained as an over the counter part.
The barracuda and challenger used the same wing but each model used differnt mounting hardware. Also the 70 cudas used different hardware than thse on the 71 models. Coded as option J81 that will appear on the fender tag if the car came equiped from the factory. A45 code will appear on tag if both the rear and front spoilers were ordered.

I think you are correct that there is a difference between the 1970 and 1971 wings. They were called Go-Wing on E-Body cars as far as I know.

I think the legs and mounting hardware were different for Barracudas and Challengers but the wing itself the same on each model.

Thanks for the info Moparnut - well i couldn't really be fazed looking for a 71 wing- they would be even harder to find than the original brake cooling scoops (non-operational) that were 71 RT only. First Place Auto make beautiful reproductions of the 71 Wing, but they are expensive, especially with freight to Australia. I'll make do with my repro 70 wing!
