Has anyone had this problem....On my 1970 440 6 pack engine with a cast iron manifold, the choke coil bolts to the manifold on the right hand side next to the center carb. The rod then attaches to the center carb choke butterfly. The parts book shows a metal cup that bolts to the manifold along with the choke coil. However the choke does not work unless you remove the cup. What is the cup for if it makes the choke inoperative? The choke works fine if you remove the cup and bolt the choke coil directly to the manifold. I have seen photos of aluminum manifold 440 6 pack cars and they do not show the cup. Am I making too much of this or not?

I think the cup is stainless steel correct? If so it should work without it and if it starts to rust, clean it out. Which would explain the lack of a 'cup' on the alloy intakes. Dave will know this one.

The cup is stainless steel and stops the choke from heating too quickly. But eventually it gets to the same temp as the rest of the manifold.

My intake is cast iron, the cup does not fit the manifold without grinding the hole it goes into bigger. I did that, but now the coil hits the bottom of the cup and does not operate at all. So I took out the cup and put the coil back on the manifold and it works fine. Why do they make the cup at all, if it is really not necessary?
