Engine stalls during idle

Postby tman » 16 Nov 2008 21:42

Ok here is my issue. When car comes to a stop or idles for appx 20 mins, the engine stops. When it stops, it is like the ignition was turned off. There is no stumble, just stops. During re-start, it will start right up, idle for 15-20 mins (as Im washing my regular car) and dies again. Starts right up when I re-start.
As I drive down the road, it is ok, until I slow or stop for a traffic light.
70 Cuda 440-6, with Mopar electronic ignition. I have wiggled wires to the ECU, Ballast resistor, and wire to distributor while it is running, wires in steering column, and there is no problem.
All ideas or similar experiences with resolution is greatly appreciated.
Thanks all.

It sounds like a possible fuel delivery problem. What is your fuel pressure at idle? Do you have the primary carb,(Center), vented? It could be a float in the fuel bowl thats leaking too. I would check these things out. It could be something very simple. At first my car did the same thing. I checked the 'basic' things first. Fuel, spark. I found my plugs were black and sooty but dry after only a few miles, they didnt get up to their self cleaning temp. and quickly fouled out making the engine die, but re-start fine. It was the heat range, the plugs were too cold. I put 1 heat range hotter and problem solved. Also I would check the primary and secondary coil wires. if they are loose and break contact the engine will die.
