that thing loks a little dirty, i would consider a rebuild, and check what jets and power valve it has,its easy to remove the float bowls to check, and clean any way,but it looks black inside ,from a fire?

Sorry, Wayne but, My Barby is a lot cleaner than that! Bowl's are full of carbon. I would take apart and, clean up. It really is a great Carb. I use a "Street Avenger", too. Very good carburater's! I'm with Drew on this. I think the thing has been on fire, backfir'ing, or something. Secondarie's don't look like, they'd had, life, in year's  Again, a very good carb, though. Mine, kicked the hell out of a SIXPAK, last year in a illegal, street race. I think he was a little bit, over carbed. Like Dave and Eddie said, Too much, is too much. Just enough, is just right! :D I'm not trying to be a sale's guy or anything but, Don at FBO, could help you out, too. Just a thought. Rebuild the carb first, though.
Patrick
P.S. Someone took the choke off of your's. F.Y.I. :disbelief:

A thing called "Reversion" will cause the inside of a carb to get a little black.

But not as bad as that!

Yes I would say that has been on fire. Probably for the same reason your other car caught fire. Bad fuel leak caused by one of the fuel bowl inlet valves not sealing. Caused by muck in the fuel not being filtered out. Or it might just not have been adjusted correctly. Or maybe the power valve blew and that was flooding the engine.

It needs all that carbon cleaning off. The 8 tiny holes you can see on the top (two per "barrel") need cleaning out WITHOUT MAKING THEM BIGGER!

Holley carbs are easy to take apart and repair though. That is one of their charms.

Add "Holley Carburetors" by Dave Emanuel to your "must have" book list.

Ok a couple of things that I need help with guys.

1. What sort of cleaning agent wil suffice to clean the bowls?
2. Where will I locate a new choke and the levers to connect to the rest of the carb set up.
3. What other areas on the carb will need to be cleaned and how.
4. I see a lot of wiring connected to my other carb on the 383, is it a case of just bolting the carb back on and reconnecting the wiring or is it different?

Cheers!!

Don't bother with the choke or the wiring. There should be one wire not "lots"?

When the engine is cold you will need to keep the revs up for a couple of mins after you start it until it idles OK. I have never used a choke for years. It is better to warm the engine before moving the car anyway.

Brake cleaner should clean the carb. Although I prefer to strip them down and clean each part with solvents/wire brush in the drill/wet and dry abrasive paper.

Wayne, if it were mine I would first get that Book, Holley carbs by Dave Emanuel and read it. Then if you decide to do it yourself you'll have the diagrams,(blowups), you need to see how it all goes back together plus the part numbers in case you decide to get a choke, or perform adjustments, and what those adjustments do. It's really required reading as Dave& Drew suggest. If you cant find anyone locally to help you this book plus our help can get it back together and maybe Dave can lend his tuning abilities to get it spot on. Here is a pic of that book. I think it's like 25.00 delivered. I got mine through Jegs or Summit cant remember. Anyways, I would do it right the first time, take it apart carefully, bowls, throttle body, baseplate, keeping those sections together until you get used to all the small parts being clumped together. It's really not that difficult and is very rewarding having a carb that you restored yourself. I would also want to know what other mods they made besides removing the choke, maybe none, maybe it was fiddled with by someone who didnt know what they were doing. A re-build will make sure it's right. Dave's right about the choke. You dont need it. I dont use one on my truck and it gets very cold here during the winters. A minute or 2 using common sense is all it takes, then you're off. BTW, it will have stamped on the casting edge near the choke tower the size of that carb, but off hand it looks like a 750

www.holley.com will help you find out the size of your carb. It has all the serial numbers so you can cross reference to find out exactly what you have. :wink2: 770 not 750 BTW  I have the 670 Truck Avenger. It's great carb! I didnt need to adjust anything besides the idle set screw. it was spot on! Your's should be the same once it's cleaned and in good working order and work vey well on your 383 Magnum!

Here's one option for non-US guys like Wayne. Seller is from UK and price £6 + shipping. I've order some other books from that seller (THE_BOOK_DEPOSITORY) in past and had no problems.
