1972 Challenger options

Postby jsalomone » 26 Jul 2008 1:14

Hey all I am new to this site and just purchased a 1972 Challenger Rallye. As far as I can tell it is all numbers matching and I have done some research on the fender codes. Can anyone tell me what striping options were available in '72. The car has the larger black strip high on the fender and door with the R/T lettering. Everything else checks out correct....thoughts?

Thanks, Joe

If you have R/T stripes then they were put on by a previous owner as the R/T was a '70 - '71 option only. In '72 there was the Ralleye option. I believe the V6X was a black stripe option or delete, others much more knowledgeable will chime in, I'm sure.

For 72-74, V6X, meant, Black Strobe Stripe's, with the fender louver's, of coarse.

Thanks I just wanted to confirm that was the case. The vin plate states the the car was a special order and it also shows that the side moldings were deleted from the order and the V6X code. Not sure if that means the fender louvers or not. I am sure someone made it look like an R/T but was curious based on the vin plate. Likely someone removed the fender louvers and changed the stripe.

I bought the care knowing it was a Rallye but just curious as to the R/T stripe still being an option in '72. Thought I read that somewhere.

Other wise all the vin numbers check out and the car is in great shape and runs great as well. A good looker.... I will post a picture when I can.

FYI, the side stripe delete code for your 72 was V68. The stripe you described at the upper edge of the fender and door with the R/T letters sounds like a 71 R/T stripe.

S in the VIN is special price class, not special order.

I do have a V68 on my plate as well. My plate also shows that it is a Rallye special order car it seems to have deleted the Rallye stripe and added V6X. That is where I am confused. That is why I am interested in knowing what the V6X stripe is...and could this really have been ordered with the car originally.

Could it be V5X?

This would be easier if you just posted a photo of it so we can see what you see.

Sorry can't figure out how to post a picture. But it is a 72 Rallye that has a V6X code on the fender tag. I'll keep trying to post a pic. thanks
