340 R/T vs 383 R/T

Postby DanaProsky » 15 Jul 2008 3:14

In 1971 the 340 R/T was $44.35 more than the 383 R/T. In todays market which vehicle is more valuable, also which one would be more desirable as a driver. Only 1078 of the 340 R/Ts were built compared to 2540 383 R/Ts. Does that make the 340s more valuable?

Its not a big enough difference to matter. Some people like the 340. Others "must have" a big block.

No 340 R/Ts in 1970.

From 1972-on there were no R/Ts.

1971 is the only year you could get a 340 R/T.

Although a lot of the 1970 340 package cars came with R/T badges on them. But they were not officially a R/T because they were JH cars.

According to Mr Robsons figures, production of 1971 340 R/Ts was 1078 units, 34 3 speeds, 313 4 speeds, and 731 TorqueFlites. Mine is one of the 731.

I just looked, it has the Carter Thermo-quad with the numbers 6-2080 on the top of the carb. It looks brand new or it was recently restored. No tag anywhere though.

My observation.... the 340 R/T (JS) was a one-year, low production car with 1078 produced. That should boost the value a bit when you look at the number of 383 JS cars made between 70 and 71, 16177.

Just curious. My car is a 71 with a 340 but is not a JS car but a JH car. Is that a R/T and part of the 1078 total?

No. It is not a R/T.

There were 1,226 JH 1971 Challengers (Hardtop+convertible) built with the 340.

41 3-speed manual
291 4-speed manual
894 - automatics.

Don't know how many were H/Tops.
