1/4 Times from stock

Postby RedRaven » 13 Jul 2008 10:28

These are the 1/4 mile times of the production engine options from stock.

Performance 1/4 mile
340:14.8 @ 96 mph (154 km/h)
340T/A: 14.4 @ 97 mph (156 km/h)
383 2-barrel: 15.1 @ 96 mph (154 km/h)
383 Magnum R/T: 14.3 @ 99 mph (159 km/h) Mine 8)
440 Magnum R/T: 13.8 @ 102 mph (164 km/h)
440 Six-Pack: 13.4 @ 107 mph (172 km/h)
426 Hemi: 13.0 @ 108 mph (174 km/h)

My questions are how much time are you expected to lose through the life of a car and how much can you improve on times with slight modifications.

I intend doing the 1/4 at the Pod without breaking my car if possible.

All those times were done with cars that the factory "tinkered" with before the magazine hacks got them to the track. They were also often driven by experienced drag racers.

You would be very lucky indeed if your showroom car ran those times back then.

My 440 with slightly hotter cam and converter on normal street tyres ran 14.85 although it was burning a bit of oil.

If your standard car runs the quarter mile in the 15 second bracket you have a fast car. So don't be disappointed with times like that.

Anything faster is a happy bonus.

i have tried to get my car to drive to bandimere turn a mid 13 sec time, and then drive home, it took me 25 years i set that goal in 1983, i had a 70 duster with a 360, low gears and could do no better that a 15.9,but i felt that car was very fast for the , and i still fel that ANY car that can get in to the 15,s is a very fast car, its fun to go and see peeps hearts ripped out cause some mag, or publication said there car would do so and so, pnly to be disapointed, by a mi 18 sec pass, they also have to realize there is several factors to going fast , not just the car, those test you see are ideal, good weather, driver, tires, elevation, etc, so go floor your car down the strip, but who cares what the slip says have a blast i do every year, i get my fix its fun for the whole family!

I've been reading a book titled Musclecar Confidential-Confessions of a Muscle Car Test Driver by Joe Oldham and pub. by Motorbooks. Dave was right (isn't he always?) about the press cars being delivered running as strong as is possible cos pretty much everything was'supertuned' or even dyno tuned. Distributors recurved, carbs jetted to suit the track and very talented drivers who were not afraid to wring the neck of a Hemi car, because then it was just a car.
Read that book if you get a chance, its very candid, funny and explodes many popular myths.
I'd like to see you mates post some of your times on the board and how satisfied you were with the results.
See ya , Adrian.
