Earthquake!

Postby dave-r » 27 Feb 2008 10:27

We are not used to earthquakes here in the UK.

We got woken up at 1am this morning by one that measured 5.4 less than 200 miles to the South of us.

I wondered what had woken me up. I thought the alarm clock had gone off and it was time to get up. So I was confused when I could see it hadn't and it was only 1am. The wife thought she had heard a burglar downstairs. So I had to get up to have a look.
An earthquake of this size, of magnitude five or thereabouts, will occur roughly every 10 to 20 years in the UK. Not something we normally even feel. They always seem to happen at night when we are asleep for some reason. :?

Just like one of the most famous British quotes, James Bond said "shaken not stirred" :P

Slept right through it, just like every other earthquake we've had in the UK. :( As an aside, I've had a chronic headache for the last few days. Gone today. Do earthquakes release EM, or similar?

I've been in a couple of good ones out in the Greek islands. It's a way of life out there. One came from some mountains behind us, under our feet, and then passed out into a bay we were overlooking. You could actually see the shockwave travelling out for miles. Cool. :D

Any sign of aftershocks up your way Dave?

Yeah I just had a shock. I went to see why one of our technicians couldn't get a data projector to work and found it wouldn't work because it has been stolen!
