Cowl Black-Out • The Dodge Challenger Message Board

Is anyone familiar with the black piece(s) that fit on the cowl next to and around the cowl weatherstripping. I see them in pictures but my 1970 RTSE car doesnt have them. Are they an option or just missing from my car and where can I get them? Steve

Do you mean the black plastic 'webbing'? You would have to find that on a junk yard car.

mine has them riz,have you looked in yr ones catalog as well as the rest of the aftermarket dealers seems i saw these offered, also i would try the local dodge dealer they will surprize you with the things they still have! hemmings is a good source too

Frank, hope all is well. I haven't searched for them because I dont know what they are called or how to explain them. I think you are calling it plastic webbing. If your referring to ther actual grills that cover the cowls then I have those. I am referring to some black sheathing of some sort that covers around these grills pieces. Some challengers seem to have this. Maybe Dave knows?

I think we are going to need a better description than that Riz. Maybe a drawing? I can't think what it is you are describing. Is it some sort of seal around the vent grilles? There should be a long seal along the top of the bulkhead to seal the back of the hood.

I would think any seal around the grilles would prevent air getting into the vents wouldn't it??

That long one is what I was thinking of when I said there was a seal that runs along the top of the bulkhead that seals the back of the hood.

Thanks everyone. The seal that runs along the top is something I need or is this the curve seal that is shown here and is referred to as the cowl seal? My original question seems to be answered however - the pieces I was asking about seem to be nothing more than black paint! I have the front cowl seal and the vents, but my car has body color around them which confused me when I saw photos like this. Thanks Riz, LI, NY

The metal work around the vents should be body color except maybe on the T/A. Gord?

I believe that the '70 model year should have the cowl blackout. A couple of original unrestored Challengers turn up at local shows on occasion, hemi and 440-6 and they have the cowl blackout.
The T/A was unique in that it also had the blackout on the fender where it bolts to the inner fenders. Not sure about other years of Challengers though.

Where are the edges of the blackout area? I can't remember ever seeing a Challenger with that bit blacked out.

So that's two things to look out for this summer. Blackout on the cowl and black or chrome 1970 slapstick shifter buttons!

Guys, this doesnt look like paint. It looks like some rubber piece or something. Any clues on how to get this stuff?
