Distributor on 340

Yep, I'm the guy that got this Awesome Ignition setup from F.B.O. This is a little long but, bare with me. Problem.... I'm very, What's the word, "Anel Retentive." I want thing's perfect. 8) Well, tonight, I decided to look at the plug's. Wanted to see that perfect tan detonation, recheck gap etc... All that was great except I pulled the gut's out two of my wire's, and had to fix them. I guess, in the process, I jacked my Dizzy cap a little bit. When I started the car, I thought I heard an exhaust leak but, the ticking was coming from from my distibutor cap. I sat my hand on it to make sure it was flush and snap! My engine went dead. What happened was, that little tab inside the rotor that keep's the thing in line broke. Instead of just throwing another rotor in there, I thought I better make sure there was no little piece's of plastic in the dizzy itself. So, I took it out to shake it upside down to let that little piece out. Bigger problem... When I did, I pulled the Oil Pump Drive and dist. gear with it. :rage: Can I simply drop the drive gear back in, with either end of the slot pointed at the first intake manifold bolt, with engine at TDC. Sorry guy's, This has never happened to me before, and I don't want to hurt the 340. Thank's, Pat

Thank's Dave and Eddie. Dave, I feel really stupid. Your post and my Mopar book really put thing's together. I never knew that about the true #1 position at TDC. Good new's is, I'm learning all the time. Thank you for your support too, Eddie! I'm glad there was nobody there to take a picture of my face when I pulled that pump gear out. :? It sure came out easier than it went back in. When I pulled the dizzy to shake that piece of plastic out, I simply checked wich way the rotor was pointing. Do you think that not having the thing at TDC had anything to do with it? :? Anyway, it's all back together and running great! Don at FBO set me up with the rotor #'s at Car Quest. He said the regular NAPA one would melt down. THANK'S AGAIN, GUY'S. Pat.

I just thought that I might add. After I pulled the gut's out of my oil pump last night, I thought I would quit while I was behind. Before i got some usefull info., the guy's at work were telling me that I pulled some kind of keeper off the oil pump. And that I would probably have to pull the oil pan, etc. I called Don at FBO and he told me to just put the thing back in at TDC. I said, "That easy?", He said, "That easy." That really made my morning! :) Then, I got home and read my messages and book. I was REAL HAPPY! :D

I have found since that some distributors will not line up like that. They are indexed differently.
In which case you just have to move the pump drive round more to compensate.
