Which Plug wires?

Postby R/T Rick » 26 Sep 2007 15:48

I am confused as to what plug wires I need? Many companies claim to have the best spiral core, low resistance, etc... etc... When in fact none of these facts have anything to do with how your engine performs. What are you guys using? I want a good wire that will last and will fit my factory looms (probably 7mm) Any suggestions? Thanks p.s. I was looking at Magnecor.

Restricting yourself to 7mm is a problem.

Normally the minimum criteria for a modern good quality ignition wire is;

1) At least 8mm diameter
2) Pure silicone insulator
3) Metal core, with spiral winding
4) Boots vulcanised to the wire if possible
5) Low impedance

The best ignition wire is the type that has a fine wire spiral wound around a ferrite or graphite impregnated core.

I have used MSD 8.5mm wires on all my cars for a few years now. They are very good.

If you have to fit thinner wires in the factory separators then at least look for wires with the other factors in that list.

I use MSD 8.5 mm SuperConductor in Black. If you go this route you will probably have to change the cap in the dizzy or drill it out to fit, make sure to use a brass cap if you go this route, it's much easier to drill than the cheap tin/aluminum conducted caps. I have only used MSD components. They have never let me down. :thumbsup: (I have a numbers matching Chrysler Year One set for 440 -6 July 1970 production date. They are exact date coded O.E.M. wires. I have a M.P. dizzy with 8.5 mm cap so they wouldnt fit, pm me if interested Rick)

Drill it out to fit? I can't just buy new cap, rotor, wires, etc...? My car was built in june of 70 not a huge deal, what are you asking for the wires? What quality (who makes them) are they? Thanks

Rick, The MSD Super conductor wires are 8.5 mm. They will not fit a stock cap. The ends that go into a stock capped distributor are too large. One way by this is to drill out the stock caps "female" terminals with a sharp drill bit that is slightly oversized. Of course, do this on a work bench and not on the car. As far as my knowledge no one makes a stock style distributor cap that fits the MSD 8.5 mm wires. Rick, another way is to simply get a set of wires from MoPar Performance or Mancini Racing they make a set of plug wires that are low impedance,(low# ohms of resistance), silicone insulated, spiral core, ect.. I have a set of original style wires for sale(new never used) I can include a picture of interested, Eddie. :thumbsup:

The tag on the bag next to the plug wires says H IQ-70 which is date coded for March 1970 until August 1970. sorry about that. Part# is 980707-15 for 440 SIXPACK engine with standard coil location.

These are exact reproduction date coded Chrysler spark plug wires, they sell em for 89.00 plus shipping. You can have them for 70.00 shipped to your door. Is that OK? :|

No problem Rick. I didnt use them because the tubular Headers I use require an angled/straight spark plug wire end which the original types 90 degree ends would interfere with the headers and rub/burn against them. Rick, I hate to recommend another site and I hope Dave doesnt mind, but there is a guy on MoParts that sells/makes his own high quality stock fitting,(custom or O.E.M.), spark plug wires. I think it's called firewires or something similar, I dont have to much time anymore so I dont go there that much. :s004:
