Dodge 440-3

Hello,

I was told my motorhome had a 440-3. In pulling the engine, I find the following numbers on the side: 4006630-440-7. Can you tell me the differance between this and the 440-3? any information is greatly appreciated.

No difference at all.

Your block is a 1978 440. The digit on the end (in your case a "7") is the tooling revision number.

Every now and again the tools used to make the blocks were changed because they wear out. It was just their way of keeping tabs on batches of blocks.

Thank God for a logical explanation. I am sick of hearing the following rumors,.."It says how much nickel is in the block the higher the number the better the block" or "It describes how thick the cylinder walls are" or.... :mrgreen:

Yep, Dave it contains a great deal of valuable info. Be aware that the main bearing #3 thrust size changed in 1975 I think. So when you order main bearings be aware of that. :thumbsup:
