HOLLEY/LINKAGE ISSUES

Postby transman » 23 Jul 2007 1:55

Hi All.
I recently purchased a Holley Spread bore to replace my aging Thermoquad. It was the one recommended by Holley and fit just great.
The only issue is the Carb Cable/Transmission Kickdown arangement. :worry:

As you know there is a rod that sticks out from the carb linkage that these two items hook onto. I figured "no problem" I'll just remove it from the thermoquad (removeable item), put it on the Holley and all will be well. Not so. :disbelief:

The linkage is now bent towards the intake manifold, and I feel that neither the throttle cable or kickdown linkage will function correctly.

Has anyone out there in Mopar land done this changeover, and if you have, any chance of a photo or two to show me how you corrected this problem? You can email me at home if you want. gshortre@telus.net.

My car by the way is a 74 Challenger with a 360 and an automatic transmission.

Thanks all!

Show us a photo of what it looks like mate. Is it really that bad?
I am also wondering exactly what the carb linkage looks like and how you have set it up.

I guess you want it to look as stock as possible? Otherwise I would say fit a Lokar kickdown cable.

Linkage issues

Postby transman » 26 Jul 2007 3:41

Problem solved guys.
My thanks to those that responded via my home email.
It turned out that all I needed was a bracket (made by Holley), and with a little die grinder work it now sets the linkage up at the proper angle. No fooling around with poor geometryfor the linkage.
The carb by the way is for GM replacements. What I find funny is Holley said it was the perfect replacement for the Thermoquad, but their tech guy said nope, for GM's. :hmmm: Seems weird that one side says use for MOPAR or the other guy and it is a direct replacement for either make, but the other side of the company says something else. What is even stranger, the tech guy didn't give the part number of the bracket required :s006: , but the MOPAR NUTS could. :D

Again thanks guys, I'm putting it together this week and we'll see what happens. :s023:

Linkage Issues "Solved"

Postby transman » 29 Jul 2007 3:09

Up and running. A few hours labour and a handful of flat washers, and voila, no more badly aligned linkage.
After a couple of twists and a bit of help from some gas in a jug, it fired right up. Let it warm up and adjusted the idle to factory specs. Nothing else. First observation, smoother idle, and no smell of raw gas that I experienced with the old Thermoquad.
Took it out for a shakedown poke and found the throttle response far better than in the past, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!!! Real easy to bury your foot into it, and have it bark the tires hard when the trans hits second gear. :s003:
I'll be taking it over to a shop where I know the owner and set it up with a gas analyzer, but super happy with the initial results. :s023:
