Fuel Sending Unit Strap, installation

Postby MLMFLCN » 16 Jun 2007 21:58

Hello,

Can someone provide some guidance on the installation of a fuel sending unit strap. From the shop manual, it says to install after the sending unit is in the tank, but the direction was not very clear. It sounds as if this piece provides grounding for fuel gauge function. Anyone ever install without, just curious to see what would happen?

Thanks as always.

one more question..

There is a second line that exits on the sending unit (not the 3/8ths fuel line). Is this a vent line, and where is the routing for this?

When I ordered my tank, even though my challenger is a 72, I ordered a 71 tank to avoid the ECS.

Thanks,

I think the strap you refer to is the grounding strap that goes on the fuel line?

The sender grounds through the fuel line as the sender is insulated. The sender has a short piece of rubber hose connecting the fuel line to the sender. The strap is to connect the two metal pipes electrically.

Without it the fuel gauge will cannot work.

Unless you are talking about something completely different and I am confused? :?

I blocked off the other tube as my tank vents from the filler neck.

Thanks for the response Dave. Do you have a diagram on how the strap is installed, I am having a brain fart here.

Also, how is your filler tube vented?

Thanks,

The strap just snaps onto the pipes to jump the short rubber hose.

My 70 Challenger has a non vented cap and a thin tube just below it that runs down from the top of the filler neck, through the trunk floor, and ends under the car or into the chassis leg or something. I can't remember exactly where.
