383ci heads

On my 383 I can't make sence of the numbers that are on the heads.
#408518-5 can someone please help with any info.

I dont have any of those numbers in my Galen Goviers casting book,(8th ed. feb 99), some additional info might be helpful such as, do the heads have the rocker shaft mounting bosses for the support stands cast into them? 1964 and newer B-engine heads have the supports cast into the head and six bolt valve covers. Prior to this 4-bolt covers and support stands were utilized. Also is this a low deck? In 1959 Chrysler made a raised block 383. It is however, very rare.

First of all.

Are you reading the numbers on the intake runner? It should be a 7 digit number.

The closest match i can find is 2406518 which is the 1964 426 Max Wedge head.

Does the exhaust valve seat lap over onto the inlet seat?

The Max Wedge heads had big 1.88-inch exhaust valves and bigger exhaust ports.

Dodn't even try to modify these heads. They are probably perfect for a 383.

the heads are on a 1966 block low deck its all original. Im trying to find out what size valves are in them so i can order new valvs and other parts to rebuild them. I can't seem to find any other numbers on them.

What i come up with before is what you just said. I also could only find that the 2406518 was the closest but when it said 426 max wedge i went straight back to the sheed to double check. The number is on one of the inlet runners.

Original 1966 block and heads would have to be #2406516 with 2.08 intake and 1.60 exhaust.

I don't know what type of heads those are. Maybe Dave or Barry could shed some light. As far as the valves make sure of the number of grooves on the valve stems. Are you going to use the stock original valve retainers and locks,(keepers)? be aware that some valves had single ,(intake usually), and double or triple grooves in the stems,(exhaust usually). Or if you are going to use new valves, retainers,keepers then none of this matters, are you going to install hardened exhaust seats?BTW, the max wedge heads have 25% larger intake ports than the standard B/RB intake ports and this is readily apparent as you lay an standard intake gasket on the ports! Also Dave is right, build that bad boy with Max Wedge heads and you would have an High RPM screamer. Those 383 were tough engines. I couldn't blow one up and tried many times as my old man beat my arse many times over it!!

thanks for all your help. I will update you with what i do. 426 max wedge heads are so rare but it would make a killer engine, show them whoosh bang jap cars what a real motor can do :D
