I have a question on the 73 challenger i just got one and found out it is a rally. Is the R/T the same as a Rally? I think i know the answer but i am new to this.

The R/T, Road and Track was part of Dodge's ad campaign of the Scat Pac cars, they were R/T's the "program" ended in 1971. So for the years 1967-1971 you had various Dodge models under the R/T banner. These were "package" cars engineered with much more than just a big V-8 engine. Cooling, braking, suspension, and of course badging were different. When the muscle car market started to "tank" after the Insurance and feds got thru with detroit muscle cars, they changed their marketing programs and performance came secondary. They were nice cars 72-74 Challenger and Barracuda. I think I remember reading where more Americans were killed in one year,(1969 or 70), on our nations roads than the ENTIRE vietnam war. Basically, the beginning of "decal" models. Remember the Charlies Angels Mustang? Glad I aint a Ford guy!!

Since the above only answers half of the question, here is the rest. He is correct on the R/T, it was a package with better/different parts on the car. The Rally was pretty much just a styling package, no performance options in the package, just made it look better.

Here's what you can do with one when restored correctly. By the way although the car, engine, tranny are numbers matching, I have added many H/P add-ons, dyno has me about 315 HP right now which isn't bad I assure you

You didn't really talk about the rally package.

Thanks guys for the info. One more question if you have a restored 73 Rally #s matching correct B5 paint job. What do you think a guy could get out of one? How is the market for this car? Thanks

1973 Rallye

I am sure will weigh in with their opinions but here is one from someone that owns a 73. If buying one in good (High Average), I wouldn't pay more than around $13 to $15k and that is assuming everything is matching numbers. The good news and bad news is that the 73 model is not as hot as the earlier challengers but if you are getting a start in restoring and learning as I am/was, its a great car to have. I have about 15K in mine and feel fairly comfortable I could get my money out of it but thats not why I bought and finished the restoration.

Be weary of the prices and also cautious of the individuals that are out there suggesting that there cars are numbers matching. I am on to my next project and I can't tell you how many dishonest people are out there trying to get numbers matching dollars for clones or less than clones. Remember, value is in the eye of the beholder and be weary of the so called numbers matching.

I have attached a recent pricing guide in Muscle Machine it only addresses to 1972, if needed I can also can post one from Hemmings.

I am not fond of NADA as they dont consider matching numbers, auctions, etc when listing their prices. If your selling you like them because they are cconsistently high but if your buying you hate them because they are consistently high.

I guess the banks use them for financing but I dont buy unless I can pay cash.

If you want to get a better feel for the value of a car, check out the bids on eBay and the prices in Collector Car Trader after you check the NADA Guide values. It's what people are willing to pay that counts.

Cool Thanks for the help. Would you all have any recommendation on the type of oil and trans fluid to run in a 340? I just got the car and don't know what the previous owner ran it. I have no way to ask him/her.

For the transmission I would run only MoPar fluid. A lot of guys run type F for better lockup on the bands, but MoPar Dexron fluid is a little different. Get a good brass/stainless tranny filter while you are changing the fluid and dont forget the gasket. Engine oil is VERY controversial, as long as it's clean and a name brand 10-40 detergent or a good synthetic. A lot of guys are using diesel oil,(zinc fortified to help flat tappet cams), and this is what I used to break in my 440-6. I switched to Mobil1 Extended Perf. after that, I use wix/Napa filters for the engine.
