Got a call from MCR the other day. It seems the sought after "171" Bendix Master is Hard to come by? Anyone know off hand where you could get a used or new 171 1970 Bendix Master? They want to buy one and ship it to me but all they find is what is on the car now!!Universal aftermarket which looks like the A-Body Disc brake master. Went to Moparts and no help there except some said good luck.

Just kidding. :D

I couldn't get one years ago either so ended up with the '71 version.

Later I switched to a lightweight MC and ditched the booster too. Sold both of those recently.
Then I sold the the lightweight one too!

I just got a new Strange Engineering lightweight MS that has a slightly smaller bore and slightly less weight than the MP version I had.

It means my car has had 5 different master cylinders on it in it's life so far!

That reminds me of my first car. I tried four different carburator combos before I sold it. Nothing strange with fitting different carbs, right?, but master cylinders.....? (Sorry)

Looks like I will be getting the master from MBM brakes. It's a repo master that looks like the 171 master, which is unavailable and would probably be pretty difficult to acquire, and need re-built/sleeved. www.mbmbrakes.com then click on mopar let me know what you guys think? Does this look like the "171" I think it does but would appreciate any feed back! I looked for them at the INDY trade show but couldn't find them.

Is it this one? #MC571 Paint it black and any differences will be minute to notice. This one looks like the correct one for my Charger, my current one is the taller one and not short and squatty like this one.

I hope so because IMO this one is very generic being on just about all makes and not correct for a Mopar. I realize this one showed doesn't have 4 holes to accept a Mopar booster but there are several in this style out there.
You asked...

Is there really a difference between power and non-power master cylinders? Yes, it says so in the ad, but is it true?

Might be a smaller bore on the non-powered cylinder maybe?

...or if the seller know that there are different master cylinders around BUT have mixed up the drum/disc difference with the power/non-power difference.... :? (just a suggestion.)

I think in general you have a smaller bore on a non-powered master cylinder to make it easier to brake. In particular on a heavy car.

Just as with manual steering you have more turns lock to lock to make it easier to steer.

So although I don't know if this is the case I would suspect so because my Challenger was VERY hard to brake with a bore closer to the original power brake bore.

And to answer your own questions Christer and Dave, I guess it would be no?The bore's are the same at 1" but different casting numbers? Is that the way you guys see it also? Sorry about the pic quality. If anyone needs me to E-mail them the entire article condensed so you can increase the resolution at your convenience, let me know. Be happy to do it.

This is what an ebay seller writes:

You are bidding on an NOS Master Cylinder for 1970-71 Cudas, Challengers, 340 Dusters, Darts, and Demons with manual and power drum brakes Part# 3461184. A mint piece, the Chrysler tag is still attached, and it comes in its factory box. (See pic´s below.)

The strange thing is that it has reservoirs of two different sizes - It should in other words be a disc master cylinder only! I assume that the seller has mixed things up!? Are there any other/better explanations out there?

(Pic´s from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 264&rd=1,1 )

Probably something wrong with the ebay description then. Wrong master cylinder in the wrong box or something!?
Thanks for your opinions.
