Body Panel Alignment

Postby Mike » 04 Jan 2007 0:57

I am working though my first full restoration of a 70 Challenger R/T. I need direction on how well the body panels align. ie 1/4 to door and door to fender. If you throw in the rocker, alignment or lack of is difficult for a rookie like myself. How flat should the panels be to one another? Is their reference material that provides factory specs? Of course I would like to have the alignment perfect. However, it doesn't look possable.

It is always possible if you know what you are doing.

As I said in another thread just this week;

First get the doors to fit right with the quarter panels and sills. This is MUCH easier with the fenders removed so you can access the hinges.

Get a nice even gap all around. The glass is adjustable in/out too so you should be able to get a nice fit usless the car has been damaged.

Door hinges sometimes need some packing behind them but there is so much adjustment on the Challenger I very much doubt you will need to do that.

Once you are happy with the doors then you fit the fenders. Try to get the same gap between the door and the fender as you have around the rest of the door. Obviously you have to check the door does not catch the fender as it opens.

Good luck!
