Motor Mount attatchment trouble??

Postby Rob73 » 26 Jul 2006 4:33

Hey guys. After over a year of having my car, I am finally ready to drop the 440 in (I'm pretty sure). I've got my B&M holeshoot 2400 mounted onto my rebuilt 727. I've got bellhousing bolts (3/8"x1 1/2"). I've got the crossmember and tranny mount from the original car. And I've got the motormounts ($8 and some change per at Advance..) and the 7/16" bolts needed for that.

However, I ran into a little problem when I was trying on the motor mounts. This is an original v8 car (73 car) mind you. The passenger side mounted on just fine (both mounts are the same, i.e. no "left" or "right" mount from what I understand..). The driver's side bracket had a hole for the stud under the mount. Though no open area by which to attatch the respective nut was anywhere to be found. The bracket is closed off from all sides!

I have not come across a discussion on this yet. Am I missing something that nobody else is?! :s020: I have already gone through the trouble of removing the power steering pump to see if on of the sides opens up. NOT the case! It is welded shut: top, bottom, and four sides. I am thinking I may need to get my friend over with his torch... Whatever happens I would really like to get it in before this weekend's over (last vew days before my girlfriend finishes school and gets to steel me back from my car and then I go off to school again 2 hrs away).

I don't know how in heck I am supposed to do this without a torch (stock bolting that is..). Maybe my car is just some kind of freak... Though, I'm sure there must be some way and you all know. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

There should be a difference between left and right mounts (at least, when I bought mine from Schumacher, there was one labelled 'L' and the other one 'R' - talking about the complete mount assembly here, rubber mount and bracket). Although since I bought Magnum mounts, it could be that the driver side mount is reinforced, hence the difference (can't remember, ordered the mounts and a torque strap a while ago).

I seem to remember that only one had a stud on the underside, and that it would have been the passenger mount (not sure, though, and the engine went in last sunday).

Do you have a pic of your K-member bracket ?

This is the stock passenger side bracket and mount. Note the nut for attatching the rubber mount to the bracket can be seen on the back of the bracket.

The bottom of the engine mounts attatch to the K-frame with a long bolt going front to back through the bottom of the bracket on each side.

There is a pin on the bottom of each mount that locates in a hole on the pads on each side of the k-frame.

Oh and there is a difference between the left and right brackets as you can see. On the drivers side there is a long bolt running through a re-enforcing tube on the back of the bracket so it attatches to the block at 4 points.

On the passenger side there is only three mounting points on the block.

The rubber mounts look the same for both sides. The aftermarket performance ones are left and right sided. They all brake (magnum or not) if you have decent power. A torque strap or solid mounts are needed with any strong engine.

Whew! You guys are awsome! I was lost in the sauce. What I have is two motor mounts. I thought that Dave called the "pad" was the bracket and that the motor mount went directly from the engine to the pad. I saw those holes in the pad and thought that stud from the motor mount went in there. Well this is good news  , except that I must now buy the brackets :disbelief: . I'm not sure if the engine will make it in before the end of the weekend. Well, I'll be back shortly, as I am sure I will run into another question in only a matter of time.

One other thing: one of my motor mounts does not have that little nipple sticking out of the side opposite the stud. Is this bad?

It did cross my mind that you might be trying to fix the rubber mount directly to the engine but I thought "no he can't be that daft"! :s024:

I think it is just there to help sit the engine down in the right place for the bolt to go easily through. You could probably live without it OK.

It's ok. There's a first time for everything. You wouldn't believe what all I didn't know just a few short years ago. I jumped into this project with just a little bit of knowledge and the untoppable desire to find a way to glue my back to a car seat permanently! Once my bracket kit from Yearone comes in I should be ready to drop the engine in!
