Pilot car?

Postby 1227 » 22 Nov 2005 2:55

Do any of you know about the pilot cars? I picked up a 70 and ran the fender tag. It's telling me the E55 is a 340-6 pack with the TA A53 package. It does have the performence package A66 but no TA stuff. It's a numbers matching car. Production was 11/69. Any info would please me. Thanks!

Welcome to the site!

E55 has more than one meaning. If A66 is coded then E55 means 340 4-barrel. If A53 is coded then E55 means 340 6 pack.

The pilot car T/As are exceptions to this, but they were built in February of 1970.

There are two T/A prototype cars that have not surfaced yet though, they would likely have much earlier dates than the two pilot cars.

I am just wondering when any pilot cars for the Challenger would first come out?

Would that be July '69? Were there some and are they still around?

Hey Dave,
The earliest Challenger pilot cars I am aware of are dated August 1st, 1969. The vins for the two I know of so far are JS23V0B100019 &
JS27V0B100028, both of these cars still exist.

I have a 70 challenger that is vin #jh23goe100179.I am not sure of the build date but decoded years ago and this early production 318 car came with rally gauges black argent grill and hl bezels black out around tail light area.Floor shift, side protection stripping,White seats, door panels and headliner and black dash and carpet.Do you think this car was made for a dealer advertisement or ordered this way by someone? It is Tor Red with a flat hood.

The black dash and carpet is correct for a white interior. You say "black Argent" but they are two different colours! Argent is a silver.

If the headight bezels and grille area have a rough texture they were silver originally and have been painted black by someone.

The purple rag...

I remember reading in Mopar Performance a few years ago about the purple R/T rag (if you go to the ads page it shows the car...) I think it was the 28th (did someone already mention 100028?) I believe that the yellowjacket/diamante was 100027). Both those machines were built Friday, August 1 1969.

Maybe I should add (I don´t understand why I haven´t done it before) that 100015 has the text "JOB NUMBER 12" on its fender tag. It is the first Hemi Challenger built according to my magazine.

Not a very big deal, but Alaskan TA says that the yellowjacket/diamante was 100022. http://challenger.mpoli.fi/forum/viewto ... 3700#13700

I guess you mean this article, right?

Some oddities except for the A64-code:
The Shrinking violet car has the chrome trim below the front bumper - The car in the article hasn´t got it.
The car in the article has wide rocker mouldings - The Shrinking violet car hasn´t got them.

The answers to these oddities are most likely owner preferences.
