Gas Cap

I am haveing trouble with a gas cap I got for under a flip top on a 70 Challenger R/T. Did the caps come in different sizes? I can sometimes get it on but than it needs help to be taken off. Did the gas cap change during the years? Was ther a different cap for the T/A?

Is the filler neck vented? Look for a tube running from the filler neck in the trunk and down through the trunk floor. Also can you hear air being sucked in when you get the cap off?

If it is not vented suction due to the fuel level dropping in the tank will make it hard to get the cap off because that cap is not vented.

Simple cure for you would be to drill a very small hole in the center of the cap.

i didn't think another gas cap went under the flip top. I have never had one.

My cap has a rubber gasket inside that keeps the fuel in. I have never lost any.

It's not a Challenger cap then.

I used to have one like yours on my Aussie Charger. Better design if you ask me.

I am not so sure about that myself. I think (I am not sure) that the NOS Flip-tops do have some kind of sealing, mostly to prevent dust from entering the fuel filler tube. Reproductions of the flip-tops don´t have this sealing. Both of them are supposed to have an inner gas cap. The inner gas cap looks like the one in the pic above.

Flip-tops on Chargers and Barracudas opens in the other direction.

The cap that I have came from Year-One. It fits the 1970 - 1974 Challenger. It has a rubber gasket. It was a surprise gift from my better half.

Regardless of the correct answer, Dave-R runs a great site. Not many places I've seen can you get this much information from so many different people. I love it.

What if there are two types of repops; with gaskets and without gaskets then?

gday dave what model was your aussie chugga ,i had a 74 vj 770 with a 265 & 4spd with a limmy it was great fun for a 23 year old at the time

Mine was earlier than that. With the square headlights. A 72 or 73 I think? It has been a long time.
There were a few hundred imported over here new. All with 318 engines I believe.

Strange. The originals had the small inner cap to seal the filler neck. I don't know why Year One are selling these as "correct".

But like I said it is a better design and was used on some other cars. Given the choice I would have one like yours.

yours was a vh with the square head lights there was 2 r/t s exported to england they both had the 265 hemi 6 & 1 of those was the only auto r/t ever made

this might be to late of a post, but what i figured out is that the year one repop cap requires a seperate "inner" cap as well. i thought back in the day the originals had a spring w/ a rubber seal on it that actually touched the inner filler part making a seal on the hole. the ones from year one now have a pointless rubber thing in them but it doesn't do anything. maybe the flip top caps im thinking of didnt' go on the challenger, but thats what i've seen.

I have my original vented locking gas cap and I have never seen another one even on Ebay. I'll post a picture when I get a chance.....very very difficult part to locate. It has two tabs that click in on each side of the filler neck, and yes it is intended to be underneath the larger sport cover we all have.

Thats a repop. I will psot my original locking cap picture when I get a chance. Its a dull pot metal finish cap that is a bit smaller in diameter.

This is the cap under the flip top in my '70 (nov '69 build). It has 'pressure vacuum' stamped on the underside and a key lock on the top (where else?). When you press the key lock the two flaps move in on the underside allowing you to unlock the cap.
Now I smell like petrol, the 98 octane stuff.....

The cap above with the tabs is the correct one that I also have on my 69 built/RTSE 70 chally. Never seen another on ebay...ever. Very tough to find.

Here are two more pic´s of the same cap. A funny thing is that it has 'pressure vacuum' stamped on the underside AND AT THE SAME TIME is of the vented type (see box). It feels like a contradiction to me :s006:

#3404668 is the VENTED type that came with 1970 Challengers with California Emmissions and all 1971s.

#3404683 The non-vented version is more straight-forward when it comes to marking.
