Gas Cap for 74 Challenger

Has anyone on this board found a NON LOCKING gas cap for the flip top gas filler? My Challenger had the Mopar acessory flip top gas filler in a box in the trunk, along with a locking gas cap. The locking cap fits, but it is a major pain in the butt to remove it with the flip top filler bolted on.
I saw a thread on this board, and tried the one for a Charger, but the Charger cap was too large to fit in the filler pipe, and also was non vented.

Yeah I found a guy on ebay selling new ones. About $8 each. Someone else asked me about this a while ago and I think I found the e-mail address. I am sure I posted the details on here somewhere. If not in this section maybe the bodywork section?

I will look on my computer at home for the e-mail address if we cannot find it here.

There is one for sale on ebay right now.
It´s a pricey NOS item though. I am sure that you can get a less expensive cap from somewhere else.

Thanks for the help guys.
One thing though, I have to have a vented gas cap. The non-vented type won't work.
I'll keep on looking.

Sorry Transman I just re-read your original post. :oops:

Can I ask you why you need a vented cap? I thought all Challengers used the non-vented type? The vent being in the filler neck?

There are two types of filler necks, one that has got a small extra tube (pointing forwards and located not far from the rear fender) and one without this small tube.

I have been wondering if I need a vented or a non-vented cap myself. (My fuel filler tube hasn´t got the small extra tube.)

It is possible to make a non-vented cap vented by drilling a very small hole (1mm=1/25") in the center of the cap.

I didn't know they used two different filler necks. :oops: I am guessing this would be for emmissions reasons?? :confused:

I think so too. I think it depends on whether the car came with ECS or not.

From the Year One catalouge: ECS (Evaporative Control System) models have a vapor separator in the trunk compartment. ECS is found on some 1970 models (it was mandatory in California in 1970) and all 1971- and later models

A saying is that a pic says more than a thousend words...

How does it come that I am beeing so intrested in fuel filler tubes...? To make a long story short, my car came with a plastic, ribbed hose, instead of the original tube :rage: :disbelief: :s021:. It didn´t have enough of flow capacity though and nearly gave me an unwanted shower of gasoline :s014:, the first time I would fill her up. I can tell you that it was very close. :blushes: That is why I have spent some time to track a tube down. (I bought one about a year ago.) Funny story, eh :s008:

Gas Cap

The cap has to be vented for emission purposes. We got a bit stupid over here in the colonies in the 70's when it came to emission standards. A few good ideas no doubt, but most thoughts and ideas done to appease the tree hugging group.
