Does anyone know what fender tag code "S6TT" stands for? I found it on a '70 'Cuda fender tag, and was just wondering (I think I know, but want to verify)?

That would start H6T wouldn't it?

I tell people a lot but it really helps to know where the code is on the tag because some codes are always in the same place.

The seat trim code is on the second line from the bottom second left after the body paint code. So any code in that position is the front seat type and colour.

I don't know where it is on the tag. Owner claims it means "bucket seats". Car is a 4-spd. with no console and buckets, but I doubt that this code is for bucket seats....that would be a C55 code, right?

Correct, C55 for bucket seats. But, the "6" in say, H6T5 or P6T5 would mean buckets seats also.

Hmmmm.....these interior codes can be so confusing. Are there any good resources for decoding interior codes (short of paying someone like Galen $1m) ?

I will try and put them do a breif synopsis for you. If you DO have $1m please PM me so I can tell you where to send it.

Let's disect the most common Chally interior code - H6X9, then a few others.

H = High trim grade ( Vinyl)
6 = bucket seats
X9 = Color, black

H6XW = Black and white interior with bucket seats.

H4X9 the 4 stands for bench seat.

H5X9 the 5 stands for cloth inserts. ( salt and pepper)

L6X9 - L stands for low, this was part of the Challenger Coupe package, the "L" got you rubber floor mats insteat of carpet, and Barracuda upholstery with fixed rear side windows.

P6T5 would be;

P - Premium (leather)
6 - Bucket seat
T5 - Tan

These are all the trim codes That I know of that you might come across although some of these you will not find on a Challenger.

Be aware that these codes refer to the front seats only. The rear seats will match but will not always be exactly the same.

First letter = trim grade.
H = High
L = Low
X = Extra Low
D = Deluxe
P = Premium
A = All class

Next is a number that tells you the material type and the front seat type.

1 = Cloth and vinyl bench
4 = Vinyl split back bench ( 69-71 )
5 = Vinyl split back bench ( 67-68 )
5 = Cloth and vinyl bucket seats ( 69-on )
6 = Vinyl bucket seats
R = Leather bucket seats

The next two digits are the interior colour. This changed from year to year so there is not room to list them all here. However the codes were similar to the body paint codes.

The code you gave us started S6TT which as you see does not fit with the above so we figured it (or your friends eyes) must be rusty and the most common code is H6 so it is most likely that. Again TT is not an interior colour. T = Tan but the next digit is usually a number which tells you how light/dark the colour is.

Thx Barry and Dave. These interior codes have always confused me. Is there a book (e.g. Paul Herd's restoration book, or another) that decodes all of this stuff, including interiors? I had several books, for these purposes, when I owned Corvettes, and never hesitated to help others. Now that I have an itch for Mopars, I seem to just run into people wanting to make money off of their knowledge, hence my Galen comment. They have a right to, I suppose. But in my naivety, I would like to think that we are all here for the love of the hobby and to help each other out. And btw, if I ever do run into a $1m, what color would you two like your hemi Challengers in? FC7...or maybe EV2?

Galen Govier's white books list all the interior info, he is the only one out there that I know of with any books that have the correct info.

Make mine EV2, but I will settle for a T/A, that will save you some money for Galen's books, and if I did have a Hemi car, I would sell it to buy another T/A or four anyway.

It was because of Galen and one or two other people like him that I started the whole Challenger web site and message board thing to start with back in 1997. The idea was to find as much info on these cars as possible and put it somewhere where other owners can find it. Back then there was a LOT of people getting ripped off being sold cars that were not as original or rare as they had been told. I can't tell you how many people were writing to me back then with sad tails about the super rare "318 Hemi" cars that they had just paid huge amounts of money for.

Having to pay Galen more money to find out their mistakes was just rubbing salt into the wounds. I thought it would be much better if there was a place they could find out about these cars BEFORE they handed over large amounts of cash.

I am a big softy really. I just can't stand the thought of people being ripped off.
