70 vs 73 tail light wiring

Hey guys, I'm building a 70 clone for the street. Originally a 73. I switched my tail panel and I'm curious if any one is experienced with the wire hook up. I'm assuming it is much different, due to the addition of the center reverse light. I'm curious if anyone has a makeshift idea - as it's a daily driver.

thought I would ask for advice before I bugger things up. :roll:

It is not that different. Just connect one wire from your existing two reversing lights to the center reverse light. Whichever one will reach.

I have a 73 cloned to a 70 TA, Do you have pics of your tail light harnes under the dash? Mine keep coming unplugged and their are several wires under the dash that are no longer used, I would like to affix these so they don't keep coming un done, but I'm unsure of which ones they are.

Just check out the wiring diagrams we have here and look for them. All the wires are color coded.

There are some differences from year to year but on the whole they are the same color wires that do the same basic thing.

Hey folks, very new to this message board. I was going to start a new thread, but this one seemed very appropriate. Hope I am not guilty of high jacking the thread...

Just bought a NOS turn signal switch for my 1972 Cuda (OH, sorry, forgot where I was, for my 72 Challenger.) Fredericks Dodge has a nice ebay store with NOS E-body turn signals switches available. (This info only applies to non-TILT steering columns.) This store offers two different parts:

Part A: For 1971, 1972, 1974
The picture shows two wiring harnesses (connectors) leading from the switch, a small one with 3 wires, and a larger one with eight wires. The larger connector has the same colors (if I can read the picture good enough) as my 72: white, brown, dark green, red, pink, tan, light green, black with tracer.) However, my 72 does not have the smaller 3 wire connector.

Part B: For 1970 1973
The picture shows only one wiring harnesse (connectors) leading from the switch, a large one with nn?? wires. This large connector seems to have a completely DIFFERENT wire color scheme, IF I am seeing the photo correctly.

Q1) Does anyone know why the 70 and 73 would be different from the 71 72 74? In other words, why switch from the 72 design to the 73 design just to switch back in 74?

Q2) Does anyone know what the smaller connector might be for as described above on the 71 72 74 NOS part?

Q3) Is it true that 70 73 has odd (odd meaning just different from 72) color codes on the turn signals harness? (Or is their photo just misleading on the colors?)

On my 72, this is what my colors do:

white, power supply when brakes on
brown, to right rear turn signal
dark green, to left rear turn signal
red, power supply from turn signal flasher
pink, power supply from hazard flasher
tan, right front turn signal
light green, left front turn signal
black with tracer, supplys ground when press horn

As far as I know all the Mopars from our area of interest use the same color coding in the turn signal wiring and the same connector in the steering column. I may be wrong but I didn't think so?

I drew this diagram years ago and it is not easy to read on this scan but if you click on it to enlarge you should be able to make it out.

Just to add another comment. On my diagram above there is normally two more connectors below the one marked for the horn. These are for buzzers I think which my car does not have. Also that end of the connector is shaped on the end.

Oh and I don't mind that you have a 'Cuda. :wink:

Dave, Thanks for your posts! I like your diagram, it confirms what my research had told me, but yours is a better way to display the info.

From a different source I have been told a logical explaination for the extra small connector:

The parts being sold are superceds of previously superceded numbers, taking into account for wiring changes made for other models that were added along the way. The smaller 3 wire connector is used for cars equipped with cornering lights, it is not used if the car is not so equipped.
