Ignition switch

Postby johnb340 » 07 Jul 2004 4:39

I tried to start my 70 challenger and had the fusible link burn up. I started doing some ohm testing with the key in run and checked the ignition harness (unhooked at bottom of column) going up the steering column and found ground on the battery and ignition 2 leads of the harness so my guess is the ignition switch. I'm so glad the fusible link did its job or I probably would have roasted marshmallows over the fire.

I seen the other post on replacing it and this job really sounds like it is going to be a royal pain in the you know what. I do have the 70 dart/challenger service manual (really thick yellow book).

I have never tried to take a steering column apart. Anybody with alot of experience doing this job that could help and kind of walk me through this??????

Just an update,

It amazes me what cobb jobs people do on these E-bodies. I pulled the can with a puller after having to force the center nut off because a previous owner decided to force it on :x . I might need a new shaft as well because it's messed up but hoping to recut it.

And there lies black electrical tape covering a few of the contacts, I can't wait to see what else is in there. I've decided to have the entire column rebuilt right. I will do no cobb jobbing on my car  .

I guess it's time to take the entire column out.

Pulling the can and repairing the turn signal switch is as far as I have gone in there myself. That was bad enough. You have my sympathy.

The kit I have does not have any instructions -and this reference (which I printed out- Thanks!) does not help.
Maybe I'll send you the link of the kit I bought and see if you have any ideas.
Thanks!
