Holly Carbs

Postby Caparco » 06 May 2004 3:07

I think i was cursed the day i bought my holly 650, had nothing but problems since i got it, rebuilt it once already and tuned many times, now its stalling out problems, and like "crap gas" pinging, still runs rough a bit and "Oh the fumes!... makes for a un enjoyable challenger ride..lol

my question is i hear edelbroc is no better...is edelbroc a carter carb? how much power difference would ya see to move up to a 750 and how about mechanical or vaccume secondaries, what do you guys run for carbs?

ps.. "yes Dave Ill check the timing "again"....

Have you checked the t....oh right. :)

Remind me what engine this is?

How are you tuning the carb?
What steps have you taken to measure manifold and timing port vacuum?
What size jets you using?
What size power valve?
Fuel pressure/float level?
How are you setting mixture levels?

Any carb will work if it is set up right. It will work even if it is only ballpark!
Changing to another make will make no difference unless by chance you hit on one that is set just right. I prefer the Carter/Edelbrock type (yes they are similar) because I find them easier to work with. But that is more of a personal thing.

I forgot to say.

The size carb you use has little to do with any power made. If the carb is too small for the rpm then it will kill power but if it is too big it will kill throttle response.

If you street drive only and or visit a track only very rarely then use a vacuum secondary carb. If you like to run up the track use a double pumper.

I would use a 750DP on any engine from a 340 up to a 383 or mild 440.

Its a 360..my cousin did it up a long time ago, got it out of a Cordova I heard.

I understand what you mean about carb changing, its still got to be set right. the internal parts to the carb im not good with,as you might of guessed. Its hard to find someone around here that has a love for the old cars and is that knowlagable. Its not like you live down the street to offer help..lol..I have talked to a friend who said he can help me...he test drove it today..said theres not alot of problems to it..little tuning and the timing may need to be tweeked.we'll see. its amazing how much timing can distrupt and engine.

Im not looking for the fastest car in town..or racing..just a enjoyable (speedy) Challenger ride!..so i think your right..my vaccume 650 should be plenty for what i need

Thanks dave..ill keep ya posted!
