Pod dash tach question

Postby roadrunner » 24 Jan 2004 13:49

I have a 1970 340 Challenger with what I call a pod dash. It has a clock in the far right hand pod. So here's my question: Was there ever an option for a Tach. in place of the clock? Or did all these cars come with just a clock.

There are some posts on here somewhere about this very thing. Might come under INTERIOR.

Both kinds of dash had clocks on the far right. The Rallye dash has 4 large 'pods' all the same size.

The standard dash has one large 'pod' for the speedo and a set of smaller 'pods'. The far right pod could be had with an optional clock. If the clock was not fitted it was just blanked off.

There is a company making a tach that fits in this space. Find that other thread on this subject to find out more.

http://www.redlinegaugeworks.com/ is the place. Here is a photo of mine. If I had to do it over again, I would put the oil pressure gauge in this spot, and a nice tasty Autometer Tach on the steering column.

Anyone ever tried putting a Autometer tach in there? I would rather a good quality autometer than having a unknown quality tach from http://www.redlinegaugeworks.com/

You can fit an Autometer gauge if you want but it will not mount the same or look like the other instruments.

The tach is more about aesthetics than function. With its small size and angle of viewing, it really is not effective as a tool. By the time you can really see the rpm indicator, it's almost 4000 rpm. Then I am usually too busy to look

That is why I fitted my tach down out of the way above the center console. Instead I fitted a shift light right in front of the usless stock tach in the Rallye dash. All I need to know on a run is when to shift and I am not going to mess about with different rpm shifts in different gears.

I don´t know if this product is familiar. It looks quite good if you ask me. Aren´t you having one of these in your Chally, Freddie?
