Postby 86 » 10 Nov 2003 0:32

I have a 1971 Challenger R/T 383 my broadcast sheet lists 044 under rear springs left and right does anyone have a car wiith these springs? or any information on these springs like the rest of the part number, number of leaves etc. I currently have incorrect springs with a different part number on the bottom leaf.

Is your car a convertible or a hardtop (yes, it differs between these two bodies!) Do you have standard or heavy-duty suspension?

(I guess that none of the ´71 R/T:s came with a 383 two-barrel engine? Is that correct?)

According to Paul Herd's restoration book (which cannot be totally trusted)

Both the 383 2bbl and the 383 4bbl had 4.5 leaves per side. However he says the heavy duty suspension which was standard on the R/T was stiffer than that used on the 383 2bbl.

HOW?

Unless each leaf was thicker???

Jen had a parts book with all the part numbers in it didn't she?

You are correct that the 2bbl version was not available in the R/T Christer.

According to Paul Herd´s Interchange manual, the 383 four-barrel cars with heavy-duty suspension used springs with 5 1/2 leaves (all other 383 cars had 4 1/2 leaves). Maybe I shall scan the page and post it when I get home?

Here are two pages from Paul Herd´s "Chrysler muscle car parts interchange manual". It is a book that I can recommend.
(I hope that the scan´s are good enough. Otherwise, I will remove them.)

I didn´t know that the 340 and the four-barrel 383 ´70-´71 Challengers WITH hevy-duty suspension used the same springs as the 440 and the hemi-cars. Now I know  . I think it is worth mentioning !?

Thanks for your replys, I have the Paul Herd book but none of his rear springs end in 044 like my broadcast sheet, also it looks to me like the standard suspension on a R/T was called Rallye heavy-duty does anyone agree or disagree with that?

It was just called Heavy Duty. The word Ralley might have been used after 1972??

That 044 code on your broadcast sheet will be just that - a code - and not a part number would it not?

What year car is it? Oh! you did say. 1971. I have some broadcast sheets at home and I will see what it has on them under suspension.

I had to drop by my house at lunchtime so I grabbed the broadcast sheets I have copies of and made a note of the spring codes.

The Challengers I have build sheets for are a 1974 Ralley 318, a 1970 440+6 and a 1970 Hemi.

Both the 1970 cars have the codes 034 for the left spring and 024 for the right.
Looking at Paul Herd's part number list the springs called for theses cars are part numbers 3420177 (left) and 3420176 (right) so the part number has no relation with the code on the broadcast sheet.

I can't see what I want on that part list you have there Jen.

So is there any other reason you think the car has the wrong springs fitted?
