Gas Cap

Postby Marcus » 13 Aug 2001 23:57

Im having trouble installing my flip top gas cap.the one that says fuel on it.see I have 2 of them each are just a bit diffrent, one opens from left one from right, also one has a what seems to be a spacer,it just seems to stick out too far from car,and it doesn't seal the hole for sure, now my other one has no spacer on it but it does has the spring seal for the hole, but is not even close to fitting on the car at all,is there a special way to mount these caps,am I missing mounting stuff, maybe a install picture would help if anyone has it.

first off marcus one is a repro the other is real(the repro people made theirs open the wrong way i also heard the trim ring didnt fit right) i had one on my last challenger and i am trying to remember which way it opened im pretty sure it was toward the rear of the car, the trim ring should fit the opening and the 4 screws that mount it are inside hope this is a start ..will you let me know which is the real one and the fake i am looking for another flip-top for my current challenger Image

1969 Barracudas had a similar looking flip open top but it opened out the wrong way. Perhaps it is one of those.

What do you think of the gas cap that is flush with the body of the car? Does it look better than the traditional flip-top gas cap? I believe I have the one of those key lock gas caps that I got at an AL'S Auto Supplies store, now bought out buy Schucks Auto Parts, for a '78 Challenger, I think, surprisingly it fit better that the one that was on the car when I bought the car from my brother, which leaked when you filled the tank more than halfway because it did not seal the funnel properly. I never did get a chance to test the new cap with a full tank when the car began its long depressing, but not depressing because the car was falling apart from the lack of maintenance, which it wasn't, but because I could no longer drive the beautiful and most impressive car that I have ever driven, as you can imagine, mates.

Was what I said funny? Well, I was trying to say is that the old cap that came with the car leaked when you went around a corner hard. The one that I replaced the crappy cap with fit very well, but did not get a chance to see if it sealed well enough to keep the gas from leaking out on a hard and sharp curve. Before I had a chance to test the new cap, the muck at the bottom of the tank began to stir up once again and I finally got sick of it and bought my dads Dodge Dakota until I could get a new tank and fix the entire front end. I want to have a 100% correct cap to use on my car, is the main point that I was getting at. Sorry to disappoint you Frank!

Marcus. It should be straight forward to mount the gas cap. It sounds to me like neither one is correct for your Challenger. The flip open top does not seal the filler tube. There is a small diameter screw on-cap when you lift the lid.

Like I said. At least one of your caps will be from a 1969 'cuda and will not fit. I suspect the other is wrong too as it should be straight forward and obvious how it fits.

The stainless steel trim ring goes over the opening first. Then the flip cap just offers up to the opening and attaches with four sheet metal screws. The screw-in cap then fits over the filler hole and you shut the lid.

I can't remember which way the damn thing opens on a Challenger. I think the hinge is on the left but as this is from memory you had better wait until I get home to check unless someone else can do that first.

The screw-on filler neck cap in the photo above is not the original one. My mate Linda managed to loose the original one first time she filled up....

Don't know why yours is sticking out so much but see the previous pages of this thread for the tank sealing thing. There is a small inner cap!

If I get a chance tomorrow i will take a few photos/measurements of mine so you can compare.

You also need the steel ring to go around the sheet metal opening.

Here is a photo of my original flip cap and also a side view showing how much better it looks with the trim ring in place. Sorry the car is not here to show it fitted.

I think looking at yours now that yours is OK. It just needs the trim ring.

Is the fuel filler tube correctly mounted? The flange on the tube is supposed be placed on the inside of the body (if I have understood it correctly....).

(It will not add/reduce many inches but it is maybe enough!?)

The problem (if it was sticking out too much) might have been due to the rear quarter being a replacement.
