1970 Challenger Convertible 4 speed with A

Postby Mitch Lautman (Vitaman) » 31 Aug 2003 21:59

I recently purchased a 1970 challenger convertible, originally a 318 car but now with a very well built 340 (I have the original 318) this car is a 4 speed with factory a/c. I know there were about 2300 convertibles that year but how many had 4 speed and a/c. I am sure that number is pretty small but I just want to find out how rare this car is...Thanks

Mitch, I missed something. Was the car a 318 car with a 4 speed and A/C?

Yep, now that's a rare combo!

I've got an A/C car with a ragtop, and my guess is that about 10% of the 1971's had them. This is not an accurate number, simply based on what I saw back then and in the used car market. I'm guessing that even less of the 1970's had them. But a 4 speed on a 318? Maybe 1 of 1 with that combo. I don't think there's a completely accurate way to find out. They can tell you how many conv. 318's were made, how many 4 speeds, but I don't think they can tell you conv. 318 4 speed A/C. You're definitely in my book in a group that were made that could be counted with one hand.

Because you're in FL and there were more A/C cars built for there than anywhere else (I'm guessing) this car probably originated there.

Let me guess. Vitaman Orange the color and white the interior?

The 318/4-speed combo is quite common. It is A/C on a convertible that is very uncommon.

Jeff is right. You can often say how many were made with one thing but it is impossible to tell how many cars were made with a particular combo of items. Although some people pretend or claim otherwise.

Wow...that's pretty cool, obviously it is pretty rare. It is such an awesome car. It has a very healthy 340 in it now with the original 318 in my garage. It is pretty much done except for a little TLC. There is nothing like driving atound South Florida with the top down and the a/c blasting in a car that will do high 12's -low 13's while shifting through the gears. Jeff, I am not sure of the original color combo but I think it was originally some type of green, now it is plum crazy with a black interior and as far as I know it is a Florida car. The top is white but it is in pretty bad shape and needs to be replaced, I am thinking about putting on a black top with a black stripe down the side, what do you guys think?
I am glad I found a place on the web to talk about my Challenger, pics will be up soon...Thanks for all your help...

Mitch, this is the place for all kinds of help. For instance, that part you're looking for may be hard to find because it has to come out of a car with a rallye instrument panel on a ragtop. I tried twenty years ago to switch to a rallye but that very part was the stopper.

My wife would someday like a Plum Crazy Challenger. Yet I would recommend you go to Dave's Home Page and see the 2 1970 Plum Crazy convertibles that are on the main page. One has a white and the other black interior. Both have white side stripes which to me is the most awesome side color with Plum Crazy. But it's your car! I would also think the white top -- especially in FL would be a better deal. Of course, I'll bet much of the time it'll be not seen!

Finally, yes, having A/C with the top down is great. But I've found above about 88 degrees (F) the A/C can't make up for the hot air coming in the car. At least in Ohio with rather humid summer days! Welcome, and let's see some pictures!
