74 Rear Bumper Bent.....Ugh.

Postby Dennis Almeida (Denalm) » 23 Aug 2003 21:26

The craziest thing just occured. While working under the hood of my car, I went in the house to get a drink of water and the car rolled down the driveway across my yard and rolled into a tree. I drive nothing but standard shift and it is habit for me to always put the park brake on. Well.....not this time. My question is: Is there any difference in the 73 and 74 rear bumpers? Neither Year One or Paddock lists for a 74, but they do list for a 73. Also, can a bumper be straightened? Thanks

If you want to keep the bumper looking like new, you've only got a couple of options.
1: get a new bumper(happy hunting)
2: take the bumper to a bumper repair facility and get it repaired and rechomed.
According to the Year One catalog I've got, the 1973 and 1974 take different bumpers, but from a friend of mine who works for a Chrysler dealer, he says the rear bumpers have the same part number from 1972 to 1974.
For what it's worth.

You're prabably looking at $200.00 to $300.00 to have restraightened and plated here in the states. From experience, take time to do some reserch before you ship your bumper out. some platers are enticing because of cost, but find out from others first how good of job they do before persuing this avenue. I would suggest show chrome ( some term as super street. one step above street chrome, unless you know of a plater that does great street chrome. I've had great luck with Fort Wayne bumper exchange in Ft. Wayne, IN. Takes some time for turn around, depending on what time of the year it is. OK..fingers tired....I'm done!

I got a new bumper from The Paddock a few years ago. The chrome is not the best quality which makes it exactly the same as the original!

My car is outside all weathers and it still looks fine. The cost was about the same as a re-chrome in Britain but You can always spot a re-chrome job and I doubt they would have got my bumper as straight as the new one.
