i asked the question and was told it was flat black-but does this mean the whole grill i have seen pic s of some grills that look like they have silver on the frown and some that are completely black which is correct and is the piece on the botton black too-i assume it would be

There were two different grilles on ´72 Challengers, one for the base model and one for the ralley. On base models, the insert is painted silver-gray; on rallye models it is painted flat black.

what do u mean by insert-the whole grill insert or just the grill section-with the outside being grey-i hope you know what i mean

Maybe this drawing can help us solve the problem:

The part we are talking about is the grille. Right?
If I have understood you right Randy, you are wondering if
the edge around the grille also is supposed to have black paint.
Right? As all of us can see on Dave´s scan above,
it seems to be some sort of thin "chrome stripe" around the grille.
Are there any ´72-´74 owners out there who can help us?

i have done mine flat black and put a silver stripe around like on the photo both top and bottom pieces flat black and have followed the silver stripe it looks great and if its not original at this point i like-it looks good-and now thats all that matters-thanks for you help and i hope your vacation was great
