Lower dash trim piece replacement!

Postby Steve R (Rizrtse) » 04 Mar 2003 0:42

I would love to find the engineer who design the attachment of the right side lower dash trim piece that fits under the radio! What a #$%$#^%$%. Remove ashtray, radio.....only to scrape your hands with a snubby screwdriver to remove 6 screws. I also noticed that each piece aligns a little different with the dash itself. Doesnt surprise me with these cars. You would think that each piece is identical - part number was! Also, while I had the ashtray out I noticed I could get to the screw that holds in the center dash AC vent. Can I get to the other side screw by removing the dashbox liner? Is this how that piece is replaced? I have a nice nos piece and would love to install it without major issues.help?

Lower dash trim piece replacement!

Yes, the lower dash trim for 1970 is different than 1971 to 1974. It's a detail often overlooked until it's time to install them (as I found out). The '71-74 trim has a moulded groove in the plastic near the edge and does have a different fit to the frame and pad.

If the dash frame and dash pad are from mixed years the job of getting the right pieces to fit becomes a bit of a challenge. (no pun intended)

Sorry, can't help with the AC vent.
